Retro Tuesday: ’80s Lyrics Quiz #5

I loved Saturday mornings in the late ’70s and early ’80s. We kids would get up and turn on the TV for an hour or two of uninterrupted watching of Looney Toons, Scooby-Doo, and what I think were the predecessors to the info-mercial: Schoolhouse Rock.

In honor of the talented David McCall, who came up with the idea of using modern music to help teach kids math, science, grammar, and history, today’s Retro Tuesday Lyrics quiz is all about Schoolhouse Rock.

So, here we go….give me the name of the song (and the missing words!):

1. “I got three favorite cars that get most of my job done.”

2. “We hiked along without a care,
then we ran into a bear.
He was a _____ bear.
He was a _____ bear.”

3. “Take your powder, take your gun,
Report to _______ _______.”

4. “A man and a woman had a little baby, yes they did….”

5. “It’s a bird, it’s a plane! It must be a UFO, but it was _____ ______! She’s a _____ girl.”

BONUS POINTS: name the six subjects covered by the Schoolhouse Rock songs.

Does anyone else own the CD released in 1996 with all the cover tunes done by artists of the ’90s: Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks? It’s a great album, and has original songs covered by The Lemonheads, Blind Melon, and others. Great disc. We love it!

And…what’s your favorite Schoolhouse Rock song?

  1. Jaye Wells says:

I don’t know any of these. But I do remember the one about the Bill Becoming a Law. Was that Schoolhouse Rock?

  2. Alyssa Goodnight says:

    1. Is it Conjuntion Junction?
    2. hairy, scary (not very good with song names)
    5. Interplanet Janet…galaxy (LOVE this one)

These are tough, and I love SchoolHouse Rock. We have the DVD and the one of the computer games.

Favorite Song? Hmmm…so many good ones. the gravity one, or the electricity one…can’t decide.

  3. Colleen Gleason says:

Yes, Jaye, that was I’m Just a Bill (sittin’ here on Capitol Hill…). I loved that one too.

And Alyssa, you got #1 and #5, and the right words for #2. You are good!

  4. Carl V. says:

I loved School House rock almost as much (sometimes more) than I loved the actual cartoons. It was one of the most clever ideas I think I’ve seen to educate children without causing them to turn the channel or turn away. Good stuff. I think you can actually get all the Schoolhouse Rock episodes on DVD. Would be a fun thing to own.

  5. Megan Frampton says:

We’ve got the SR box set with the original tunes, plus the DVD. My son loves listening to the science disc.

  6. Jennifer Smith/Ila Campbell says:

To add on to what’s already right:

#3, the missing words are General Washington

#4: The song is: 3 is the magic number

Bonus: I know they do math, history, english and science because that’s what the VHS covers. I don’t remember the subjects of the others.

My absolute favorite is about the women’s rights movements. men:”And don’t forget my, my mash potatos/ as I go downtown and cast my vote for president.”

    Rockin’ lib song!

  7. Zeek says:

I miss those days. I see what my nephews and nieces watch and I’m always like “What happened to good ol Scooby Doo or Wonder Twins?”

    Yep we’re getting old.

I know the first of your quiz is :Conjucntion Junction” but the rest I couldn’t quite out my finger on.

Conjunction junction, what’s your function is probably the one that I remember the most … next the “i’m Just a Bill” one and OH! “Interjection” HEY! OUCH!

    heee!

  8. Mailyn says:

OMGawd, you guys are scaring me. I hated the 80’s LMAO.

Colleen, dude, what’s up with your book in Amazon? They don’t have the book cover up?!?!?

  9. Caryle says:

I loved Conjunction Junction and I’m Just a Bill.

And while I don’t have the CD, I wanted it. :)

  10. Jana DeLeon says:

I loved Schoolhouse Rock - that’s how I knew the preamble to the constitution for civics in eighth grade. :)

  11. Colleen Gleason says:

    Jennifer, you rock!

Okay, so far we’re missing the names of the songs for #2 and #3, and that’s it!

Mailyn…I know, I know! about the book cover. I emailed my editor last week about that very same thing, and she said it’s still a little early yet (!!) (but people want to order the book now!), but they should have it up by the end of the month.

Thanks for keeping an eye on things for me.

Jana, me too–on the preamble. I’ve never forgotten it!

Carl, Megan, no guesses? Come on! You’ve got the DVD (which is something I have to get for my kids–I want to make them watch it over and over again…)

Zeek, I can’t remember the Interjection one! I’ll have to look it up.

  12. Diana Peterfreund says:

That’s how I know the Preamble as well. It’s actually a damn good song. One of my “singing in the shower” regulars.

My favorite? Oh… gee… Probably Conjunction Junction (for pure catchiness)… or I’m Just a Bill (think of it every time I see a bus stopped at railroad tracks), or Shot heard Round the World, or Lolly, Lolly Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here (because honestly, it’s how I remember adverbs to this day).

  13. Colleen Gleason says:

I like Lolly,Lolly,Lolly too, and I love the Blind Melon version of Three is a Magic Number.

“We the people…in order to form a more perfect union…”

  14. Devonna says:

My favorite Schoolhouse Rock was “I’m Just a Bill”. That song seems to be on a continuous loop in my head.

About the same time that Schoolhouse Rock songs were popular, I remember some of the health songs/commercials that used to air. There was one and for the life of me I can’t seem to remember what they were called, but the one I remember is the one that went along the lines of “Don’t drown your food; in mayo, salt, ketchup, or goop”…darnit if that’s all I can remember and that’s another one I can’t seem to get out of my head. Yes, my niece thinks I’m warped because I will actually sing it to her every time she puts dressing on her salad…….

  15. Mailyn says:

Girl puh-lease, I’ve been keeping an eye out on this book for god-knows-how long. In fact, I KNOW I posted about this a while back. LOL. I am so damn impatient. LOL.

  16. Zeus says:

Wow! What a great surprise for my Tuesday! I loved Schoolhouse Rock when I was in school, and to this day “Conjunction Junction” is my favorite.

Thanks for the trip down the proverbial memory lane!

  17. Jennifer Smith/Ila Campbell says:

I found it! #2 is “Unpack Your Adjectives” and #3 is “No More Kings”. My favorite is “Suffering ‘Til Sufferage”. Whew! Now I can rest. (albeit with these songs going through my head. If you want the lyrics, check out this site.

  18. Janice Lynn says:

Ahhh, my new secret to keeping my sanity is not to read Colleen’s Tuesday posts until I’m sure the answers have been posted. That way I don’t spend my entire day trying to figure out what I know is right on the tip of my tongue. Of course, not the Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, get your adverbs here is playing in my head.

My kids even love school house rock! :)

  19. Anonymous says:

Omg, Lolly, Lolly Lolly! I forgot about that one! Another good one!

Ok now you’re making me think! I am almost positive there’ was an Interjection one?? I’ll have to check too!

  20. Colleen Gleason says:

LOL, Janice. But you’re such an ’80s girl, I’d think you’d get most of these anyway.

Zeek, there is an Interjection one, but I can’t “hear” it in my head. I really do need to get that DVD.

And I need to get a new blog post written. Hang on…I’ll be back shortly.

  21. Anonymous says:

You probably can’t hear it because it was more of a talking one it’s the kid shouting “HEY!” “OUCH!” that sticks with you!

  22. MaryF says:

I was a music teacher, so I taught these songs. We still do the noun song and “Three is a Magic Number” and the preamble one.
