I loved Saturday mornings in the late ’70s and early ’80s. We kids would get up and turn on the TV for an hour or two of uninterrupted watching of Looney Toons, Scooby-Doo, and what I think were the predecessors to the info-mercial: Schoolhouse Rock.
In honor of the talented David McCall, who came up with the idea of using modern music to help teach kids math, science, grammar, and history, today’s Retro Tuesday Lyrics quiz is all about Schoolhouse Rock.
So, here we go….give me the name of the song (and the missing words!):

Does anyone else own the CD released in 1996 with all the cover tunes done by artists of the ’90s: Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks? It’s a great album, and has original songs covered by The Lemonheads, Blind Melon, and others. Great disc. We love it!

These are tough, and I love SchoolHouse Rock. We have the DVD and the one of the computer games.
Favorite Song? Hmmm…so many good ones. the gravity one, or the electricity one…can’t decide.

I loved School House rock almost as much (sometimes more) than I loved the actual cartoons. It was one of the most clever ideas I think I’ve seen to educate children without causing them to turn the channel or turn away. Good stuff. I think you can actually get all the Schoolhouse Rock episodes on DVD. Would be a fun thing to own.

#4: The song is: 3 is the magic number
Bonus: I know they do math, history, english and science because that’s what the VHS covers. I don’t remember the subjects of the others.
My absolute favorite is about the women’s rights movements. men:”And don’t forget my, my mash potatos/ as I go downtown and cast my vote for president.”

I miss those days. I see what my nephews and nieces watch and I’m always like “What happened to good ol Scooby Doo or Wonder Twins?”

I loved Schoolhouse Rock - that’s how I knew the preamble to the constitution for civics in eighth grade.

Mailyn…I know, I know! about the book cover. I emailed my editor last week about that very same thing, and she said it’s still a little early yet (!!) (but people want to order the book now!), but they should have it up by the end of the month.

That’s how I know the Preamble as well. It’s actually a damn good song. One of my “singing in the shower” regulars.
My favorite? Oh… gee… Probably Conjunction Junction (for pure catchiness)… or I’m Just a Bill (think of it every time I see a bus stopped at railroad tracks), or Shot heard Round the World, or Lolly, Lolly Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here (because honestly, it’s how I remember adverbs to this day).

My favorite Schoolhouse Rock was “I’m Just a Bill”. That song seems to be on a continuous loop in my head.
About the same time that Schoolhouse Rock songs were popular, I remember some of the health songs/commercials that used to air. There was one and for the life of me I can’t seem to remember what they were called, but the one I remember is the one that went along the lines of “Don’t drown your food; in mayo, salt, ketchup, or goop”…darnit if that’s all I can remember and that’s another one I can’t seem to get out of my head. Yes, my niece thinks I’m warped because I will actually sing it to her every time she puts dressing on her salad…….

Wow! What a great surprise for my Tuesday! I loved Schoolhouse Rock when I was in school, and to this day “Conjunction Junction” is my favorite.

I found it! #2 is “Unpack Your Adjectives” and #3 is “No More Kings”. My favorite is “Suffering ‘Til Sufferage”. Whew! Now I can rest. (albeit with these songs going through my head. If you want the lyrics, check out this site.

Ahhh, my new secret to keeping my sanity is not to read Colleen’s Tuesday posts until I’m sure the answers have been posted. That way I don’t spend my entire day trying to figure out what I know is right on the tip of my tongue. Of course, not the Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, get your adverbs here is playing in my head.

I was a music teacher, so I taught these songs. We still do the noun song and “Three is a Magic Number” and the preamble one.
