Oh, great list! Judy Blume was so pivotal.

p.s. I’ll drop you a line with me address this evening. Yay for me! I won!

  2. Vicky says:

Actually I’m getting to read some of these for the first time now that my oldest daughter is in 4th grade…. oldies, but goodies!!
As a child, growing up in England, we read a lot of Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl books!

  3. Anonymous says:

    Great list of books! :) I read 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 13 when I was younger. Absolutely loved Little Women.

    Happy TT! :)

  4. factor 10 says:

Ooooh, Colleen! What a pretty site, and a great list! I was just talking about #’s 3 & 7 last week! Happy TT, and I’ll be back!

Great list! Nancy Drew was a runaway winner for me when I was a child.

    Happy Thursday!

  6. Zeek says:

    I devoured Trixie Belden! Heee!

  7. Jaye Wells says:

Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary were my favorites. I also read a lot of Babysitter’s Club.

  8. Caryle says:

I adored the Ramona books when I was growing up. Another favorite was a book called the Rainbow Goblins. The illustrations were amazing and so rich.

I was a weird child, though, I skipped a lot of the traditional kids books. When it was library day, more often than not, you’d find me in the mythology and fairy tales section.

  9. meljean brook says:

    Ruth Chew! AHHHH!

I have been trying to figure out the name of a book I loved as a kid (it was about an upside down witch) for years…it wasn’t this one, but another one by the same author (Witch in the House). And now I finally know what it was because of this post!

    …I love you.

  10. Janet says:

What a great list! I think I’d have a hard time coming up with 13 just because my memory is so bad. Misty of Chincoteague, Black Beauty, and Make Way for the Ducklings

  11. Anonymous says:

I only read Nancy Drew and the Three Detectives.

The rest was the fabulous Enid Blyton.

  12. Barbara H. says:

I’m only familiar with 6 of those, and I think only read a couple. I wish I could remember many of the books I read as a child. I remember “Little Women” and “Land of the Limberlost” and a biography of Martin Luther. I read sll the time, though.

  13. SilverWillow says:

Ohhhh…I love your list, I wish I had thought of this too!! I was into Greek mythology when I was a kid, I also loved Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, and I was into the Hardy Boys, loved a good mystery, and loved tales about witches, ghosts and vampires. Your website is off the chain!!
Thanks for stopping by mine, too. Have a Happy Thursday!

  14. Maggie says:

I also am familiar with most of those books. My favorite however was Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret, by Judy Blume. Being a Margaret and feeling like she did in the book made the book really come to life for me.

  15. Carl V. says:

Thankfully I’ve heard of or seen many of these though I have to admit that I have read none of them. I love finding out what books people read as children that stuck with them and meant something to them.

For some reason the image above your Thursday Thirteen banner won’t load for me. Just wanted to let you know.

  16. Dane Bramage says:

Great list. Are you thinking about writing childrens stories along these lines? Thanks for stopping by my T13 13 Stress Relievers Edition I’ll be adding your trailer to my site in a post tomorrow.

  17. Colleen Gleason says:

Oh my goodness! Lots of comments piled up here and I’ve been dallying elsewhere most of the day.

Thanks to all for stopping by. I love this Thursday Thirteen…it’s so fun to meet different people.

Meljean, I love you too. *smooch*

I think Judy Blume was such an influence on an entire generation of females–my friend Diana Peterfreund participated in a collection of essays about just that. I don’t think it’s been released yet, but it would be wonderful to get.

Dane, I don’t plan on writing childrens books at this time…I just don’t have any ideas that seem to fit that age. (Although I have kids that would enjoy them!)

SilverWillow, I can’t believe I forgot about Narnia when I made this list!

And Enid Blyton! I loved her “adventure” series.

Zeek, and other Trixie fans, I loved her so much more than Nancy. Nancy, while I devoured her, was too perfect. Trixie was a normal girl. Besides, I always thought Jim Frayne was hot.

  18. Zeus says:

Nancy Drew was by the far the best! The Hardy Boys were also quite good. I enjoyed #1 and #2 as well. Terrific list, and who knows? Maybe when I find time, I’ll revisit my kittenhood to read the others!

  19. Audrey says:

I read Little Women all the way through in one day - it was so good!

Enjoy your pizza tonight - we had pizza last night and it was soooo good!

  20. MaryF says:

I agree - I loved Misty of Chincoteague. I didn’t read Blackbird Pond till I was in college (children’s lit) and loved it. And These Happy Golden Years wasn’t my favorite Little House book - The Long Winter was MUCH more romantic, when he came for her every weekend when she was teaching away from home.

  21. Jennifer says:

Good list. I used to read Nancy Drew & Judy Blume books. I am hoping that my daughters will one day want to read them too.

  22. amy says:

Oh the memories..YOu had to love Judy Blume and the Sweet Valley High books!

  23. Anonymous says:

Every girl should read Little Women. I also like #8 & 13. Good list.

    My TT is up.

  24. Jenny Ryan says:

Oh, Nancy Drew-how I wanted to be her!

Thanks for visiting my TT :)
