Thirteen Record Albums from the 1980s
That I Have Hanging on my Basement Walls
Yes, about four years ago I decided to take all of my old albums out of storage and do something with them, so I hung them all up on my basement walls (after I'd painted them white). They're quite the conversation piece, really, especially when someone from my–dare I say generation?–comes over.
So here is a selection of thirteen of them…how many did you have? Come on, 'fess up!
(By the way, I take full credit for all of them. My Music Man wouldn't touch most of them with a ten-foot pole.)
1. Prince/Parade
2. Crowded House
3. Billy Joel/Songs in the Attic
4. J. Geils Band/Love Stinks
5. Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band/Against the Wind
6. YES/90125
7. The Clash/Combat Rock

8. Sting/Dream of the Blue Turtles
9. Cutting Crew/Broadcast

10. U2/The Unforgettable Fire
11. Talking Heads/Little Creatures
12. The Thompson Twins/Into the Gap
13. Culture Club/Kissing to be Clever

I think I had all of these at one time (well, except Culture Club.)! Now most of them have disappeared - all I have left are Sting, U2, Billy Joel, and Prince.
Where do all my missing cd’s and cassettes go? And do they meet up with my missing socks and talk about me?

First, I’m jealous that you have a basement.
What a cool idea to do that with your albums.
Second…the 80’s…sigh…so not my era. Love Seger though.
Now the late 60’s and 70’s? Yeah, I could do albums from then. hehehe.

How fun! I didn’t own any records except for a few children’s ones like Music Machine.
Decorating with old cassette tape covers just isn’t the same. Plus, those dumb cassette tapes never lasted long.

What an awesome idea for a basement decoration! I have so many records that are collecting dust it’s sad. One of my favourites was Kate Bush’s The Hounds of Love. Great cover.

Great TT!!! Admittedly I only owned 6, 8, and 11. But I did have Thriller on 8 track!
Happy TT!

Um, I’m going to have to be honest here. I think I only ever bought 2 albums before the music industry really went to CDs. One was Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell, and the other was a David Bowie album, but I can’t remember which. That’s a fun idea though!

I had the Culture Club, but I also had Thriller. And 9 to 5.

I still have all my albums. The first one I ever bought was ‘The Kick Inside’ by Kate Bush. Then I bought all her following albums. I also have The Thompson Twins, John Lennon and The Adventures ( and lots more)

Love Love Love Prince, Crowded House, and of course U2

Great decorating idea! I don’t know if I had any of those albums… Culture Club, maybe, but I did recognize them!
January 18th, 2007 at 10:22 am
Very cool! What a great decorating idea.
All of my albums were given away or sold during one of my moves. It would be nice to have some of them still.
Happy T13.

Man, I didn’t have any of those albums. I had Expose’, the Bangles, the Go-Gos, Whitney Houston, Def Leppard, Sawyer Brown, Men at Work, Madonna, Loverboy, Kool & the Gang, Klymaxx, Heart, and Erasure (to name just a few, and yes, I had rather eclectic taste *g*).

I grew up mostly on Country music, but I know and love many of these! Happy TT!

I don’t know that I would have fessed to the world that I owned the Culture Club album if I were you.
Prince, U2, Thompson Twins (Hold me now, baby!)…I can understand, but Boy George? I’m shuddering just typing his name!
Happy Thursday to you, Colleen!

What does it say about me that I’ve not heard of any of these people?
Or maybe what does it say about Colleen? *g*

What a great idea! I attended a very strict church and school during the 80’s, so I missed that great musical era. I’m just now rediscovering it
January 18th, 2007 at 11:46 am
Great list! I love Billy Joel and Bob Segar. Happy TT!
January 18th, 2007 at 11:48 am
I loved the J. Geils Band! I have Prince’s 1999 and Purble Rain on Album. I’d have to hang my Adam Ant albums up too, if I decorated with albums. Hmmm… that’s a good idea for decorating my stairwell. Wow!
January 18th, 2007 at 11:53 am
Interesting idea! Did you frame them? I have so many albums and the only one I have displayed is Abbey Road by The Beatles…love that pic of them crossing the street!
Thanks for visiting!

Ah, records! You have some fun ones! I have mine stored away somewhere. I suspect that most of mine are of the Def Leppard variety!
January 18th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
I love the music choices there! Unfortunately, back then, most of my records were kiddie records. Most of the “popular” music that I had was recorded from the radio onto tapes. I scurried across the room to hit record whenenever a good song came on my favorite radio station. I have tapes full of music missing the first 10, or so, bars of music.
Ah, memories.

How many do you have in total hanging on the wall? Will there be a follow-up T13 next week for the rest?
January 18th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
OMG - You had Crowded House on the wall? Yay for us Kiwis!
January 18th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
That is really cool! Do you have The Wedding Singer soundtracks, or do you already have the songs on other albums?
January 18th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
Nice collection - personally, I think I owned only two of the ones you listed but must have borrowed the others from friends!
January 18th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
Well I don’t have any records (well I do but not Rock) but I have every single one of those songs on a tape.
I think “Against the Wind” was pretty much my favorite. Happy TT,
Jeannine

Hey! Culture Club were the ‘biz’ in the 80’s! Definitely the best era musicwise. I also loved Erasure. Saw them in the early ’90’s and they were brilliant. I saw them again last year in Dublin, *still* brilliant.
Ooooh, I could blog all day on 80’s music!
January 18th, 2007 at 5:09 pm
I still love Unforgettable Fire, Prince, and Combat Rock.
I am also thinking I need to check out your books, but only after I finish grading my essays.
January 18th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
I must I,ve heard all of those even if only a couple just sound a bell! Other on that list, I just start liking when I ws older!!
My tt are up
January 18th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
GREAT LIST! I owned 7 of those albums in the 80’s and just got a little shiver remembering my LP collection. Good Times.
And hey - congrats on “The Rest Falls Away”! I haven’t read it yet but have seen some wonderful reviews. And I really dig the cover!!

Ohmigosh! U2!! Unforgettable Fire!!! … Some good memories attached to those songs!
