(Dare I say fan mail? Wow!)
I got a great note from a reader in Belgium today. She'd just finished The Rest Falls Away, and wanted to tell me how much she'd enjoyed it (although the ending had made her cry).
But she also sent me some pics of Vampire Hunter D (because I live under a rock, I had no idea who he was), and said that he reminded her of Max. (Or vice versa.) So I thought I'd share to see what others think.
I think he's pretty hot, actually. And of course, Signet Eclipse's version of Max is on the cover of Rises the Night (off to the right, there, with the big phallic-symbol stake).
As for me…when I was working on the book, this was who I used for Max inspiration:

The second installment of the Gardella Vampire Chronicles takes Victoria to Venice and Rome.

He’s a very young Christopher Plummer.

We really need to work on your knowledge of pop culture vampire lore.
Vampire Hunter D is an interesting choice for Max. I see him as more akin to Abraham Van Helsing as portrayed by Hugh Jackman in Van Helsing, though. I saw Max as someone much more old-world, sophisticated, dangerous. Good pix you have for the inspiration.

Heh heh. I know, Carl. That’s why I post these things–so I can come out of the closet, and so the rest of your in-the-know people can lead me along.
I like the way you describe Max. That’s good.

Delurking to say I’m a huge fan of Vampire Hunter D! I think that’s interesting that D was compared to Max, though I wouldn’t make that one myself. (D’s a half-vampire!)
Bloodlust is definitely more visually stunning than the first Vampire Hunter D movie, but it deviates a lot more from the book it’s based on. (Though that’s nothing to cry over since that particular book was not that good…)
