Thirteen Places I Wanted to Visit
Thanks to Books I Read as a Child…
1. Treetops Lodge in Kenya, Africa (thanks to Nancy Drew's The Spider Sapphire Mystery)
2. Istanbul, Turkey (and based on Lila's comments about her visits, I really want to go now!) (also thanks to Nancy Drew's The Mysterious Mannequin)
3. New Guinea (thanks to Willard Price's Gorilla Adventure)
4. The Amazon Jungle (also thanks to Willard Price–this time for Amazon Adventure)
5. Carlsbad Caverns (thanks to Trixie Belden and the Mystery at Bob-White Cave)
6. The Prairie (I'm sure you can guess why!)
7. Narnia (again, I'm sure you can guess why)
8. Nantucket Island (due to Trixie Belden and the Mystery of Corbett's Island where things got really hot with Jim Frayne! *fans self*)
9. Salem, Massachusetts (thanks to The Witch of Blackbird Pond)
10. Hogwarts (oh, wait…I wasn't a child when I read that. Oops.)
11. I always wanted to go…Where the Wild Things Are.
12. I wanted to go to Scotland, too, because of The Clue of the Whistling Bagpipes (and I did do that, finally!)
13. And because of the Hardy Boys, I wanted to go scuba diving…but I can't remember which book it was. Anyone?

What a great list, I might have to steal the idea for a future list. I wanted to go to Terabithia, and after reading Gone With the Wind in 6th grade wanted to go on their honeymoon trip with them. I read all the Nancy Drew’s but oddly, can’t remember her traveling anywhere she couldn’t get to in her convertable.

you are quite an adventurous person! those places sounds interesting!
February 8th, 2007 at 8:19 am
Thank goodness! I wasn’t the only one who read Trixie Beldon! I never got into Nancy Drew, but I think I owned every Trixie Beldon book bar 3.
One day I will get to go back to Scotland - my visit was short and sweet, and it made me home sick for New Zealand.

I’ve always wanted to visit Middle Earth myself.
I’ve heard a rumour that someone is making the Hardy Boys books into a film. But calling it the Hardy Men, or something.
February 8th, 2007 at 9:10 am
Istanbul’s on my Europe list–in the theory that I’ll earn enough from part-time jobs to travel some, since I won’t be able to go home during the shorter breaks.
February 8th, 2007 at 9:26 am
I wanted to go to the Mushroom Planet. There were a series of books about it that I read when I was a kid and it sounded like a fascinating space journey to young little me.
And I want to see Hogwarts too!
February 8th, 2007 at 9:26 am
Oh yeah! Where would we be without Nancy, The Hardys and Trixie! They were my introduction to the world, too.
February 8th, 2007 at 9:51 am
Man, I’ve never heard of most of those!
February 8th, 2007 at 9:57 am
I’m going to go to Salem someday… hopefully soon.
If you find the way to Narnia, let us know.
BTW, I love the look of your blog.
February 8th, 2007 at 9:57 am
I loved the Trixie Belden mysteries. I think I had every one as a kid. Those and A Wrinkle In Time were my favourites growing up. And then for some reason I started reading Stephen King.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:03 am
I always wanted to go to Narnia. I love your topic this week!!
February 8th, 2007 at 10:05 am
I STILL want to go to the Amazon! I’ve been to carlsbad caverns, I lived in New Mexico - been in slaughter canyon there too! Great cave system. Yes, Narnia would be an awesome place to visit
I like your list. Thank you for sharing.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:06 am
What a great list of places, Colleen! And I have to agree with Fence, I think Middle Earth would be a fantastic place to visit!
Happy TT and so glad to see your Mr. Linky’s is working!
February 8th, 2007 at 10:07 am
Ditto on Narnia! Happy TT!
February 8th, 2007 at 10:09 am
Oh, I so remember those books. It would be nice read them again. It does transport you to places….and I do wish I can go there in person too .Narnia would be a good place to visit for sure.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:13 am
Nancy, Trixie and the boys all had a lot of fun, didn’t they? You’ve got a great list!
As for the scuba diving Hardy Boys, since they lived near the beach and went surfing a lot, they could have gone diving in a lot of different books.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:19 am
I was a Trixie Belden fan too.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:19 am
Loved your list — brought back some great memories of books I read as a kid. I always wanted to find the way to Narnia, too — and ohhh, Middle Earth, too.
Happy TT, and thanks for visiting my blog!

I was a Trixie Belden fan too.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:21 am
Loved your list! I know what you mean about Hogwarts. I want to go too!
February 8th, 2007 at 10:22 am
after reading about the snow that piled up to the rooftop, I no longer wanted to go to the prairie.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:26 am
Oh, I wanted to visit Narnia too! And I wanted to go to the farm in Charlotte’s Web.

Thanks for visiting my 13. I’m planning on blogging about one of the books that I picked up on my Borders shopping spree.
February 8th, 2007 at 10:51 am
So many amazing places to go! I can’t pick which of my dream places to go I’d want to go to first!
February 8th, 2007 at 10:52 am
What a fun list!
February 8th, 2007 at 10:53 am
I LOVED Trixie Beldon. I wanted to BE her. So much so, I made my mother call me Trixie (she hated that). As I got older, the name Trixie began to sound more like a stripper or hooker, so by the time I was 18 and legally able, I decided against the name change!
I am SUCH a loser
February 8th, 2007 at 11:07 am
oh great list, Maybe I’ll use some of themin my show.
February 8th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Wylie, not at all. You’d be a loser if you had actually changed it though. *g*
February 8th, 2007 at 11:22 am
Can I go to Hogwart’s with you?
February 8th, 2007 at 11:30 am
I’m thinking this is a great way to choose vacation spots–by the interesting places you’ve read about in books. Maybe someday.
February 8th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
The only Nancy Drew book I remember with any detail was the Mysterious Mannequin. Maybe because of the setting. That must have been 30 years ago. Course I can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning….
February 8th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
when you find where the Wild Things are, let me know.
February 8th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
come to Salem on Halloween…I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed!
LOL on #10
February 8th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
AnneD, I loved Trixie much more than I loved Nancy Drew–although I glommed down both of those series, and then some.
Wylie, did you want to be Trixie ’cause you loved Jim too? Must be the reason my first boyfriend was a redhead. Something about those guys!
Fence, I would have put Middle Earth on my list, but I haven’t actually read the Tolkien books (of course I love the movies). I read most of The Hobbit, and most of The Two Towers, but can’t really claim to have read them all.
Gypsy, if I can find the way to Platform 9 3/4(Is that it?), you can come! But I get Snape. (Sorry, Janet.)
I think to get to Narnia, you have to 1) find an old wardrobe, 2) climb under a wall at a private school, 3) be sucked into a painting of a boat, 4) get in a train crash…problem is, I can’t find the painting or the wardrobe!
February 8th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
I almost forgot all about Trixie Belden! I think I read way more of those books than the Nancy Drew series.
February 8th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
I always wanted to go to Narnia, too.
Happy TT — I’m running out the door to a party!!
February 8th, 2007 at 3:52 pm
What a wonderful idea for a list! I don’t know if I could dredge up 13 places because of books I’ve read, but I can definitely think of a few because of descriptions in fiction. The Swiss/Italian border comes to mind first because of “Day of the Jackal,” one of my all-time favorites.
I read most of the Hary Boy’s stuff, but it was long enough ago that I can’t help you with the scuba diving.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:04 pm
I always wanted to own a pig names Wilbur
February 8th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
so, i’m a bit ashamed to admit that i’ve read none of those books. well, i read “little house in the big woods,” but technically, that involves no prairie.
and somehow, i call myself an english major. ah well.
my TT is up - feel free to come visit.
February 8th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Terrific Thursday Thirteen!
Thank you for your visit to mine.
Have a wonderful day!
Happy TT’ing!

Oh yes! I cried, sobbed, and bawled when I finally realized that I could not go to Narnia. That was in fifth grade, while my mother primly sat on the edge of the bed, looking–for once and only once–completely perplexed.
When I was 4, she promised we could go visit Sesame Street the following week. I’m still a little put out we never went, LOL.
February 9th, 2007 at 1:40 am
Great list!
I loved Trixie Belden — glommed all of those books when I was a kid.
One of my “gotta-visit” book series was The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper. I read those when I was in Junior High and desperately wanted to go to the UK to see all the locations mentioned in the books. I actually made it to Cader Idris, in Wales. I was thrilled.
