Thursday Thirteen #25

Thirteen Reasons You Might Want to Win
an Advance Review Copy of
Rises the Night

1. If you like books about vampires  (there are vamps galore in the book)

2. If you don't like books about vampires (there are vamps in the book, but they're the bad guys)

3. If you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the book's about a female vampire slayer…in 19th century London)

4. If you like novels by Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer, Julia Quinn, Liz Carlyle, Stephanie Laurens, Diane Gaston, Janet Mullany, Jo Beverly and any number of authors writing stories set in that time period (the book starts in 19th century London)

5. If you're tired of books set in 19th century London about the ton, and Society, and debuts… (the book starts there, but more than half of it takes place in Venice and Rome)

6. If you think a woman should have more than one guy to choose from during her life before settling down (the female protagonist doesn't make her choice yet!)

7. If you don't like scary, bloody, gory horror novels but are somewhat fascinated by the huge influx of vampire novels on shelves nowadays (this book is a vampire-lite book, without being light and fluffy, yet not scary or too dark)

8.  If you liked Sydney Bristow (the book's an action-adventure with a female protagonist, but in a historical setting)

9. If you read The Rest Falls Away and can't wait for June when Rises the Night will be on the shelves…. (here's your chance…keep reading for the rules!)

10. If you read The Rest Falls Away and are shipping for Sebastian (he's got lots of page time in this one)

11. If you read The Rest Falls Away and are shipping for Max (he does too!)

12. If you read The Rest Falls Away and want to get to know Aunt Eustacia and Kritanu better

13. If you read The Rest Falls Away and want to know more about Venators and their history

Yes indeed…the ARCs (Advance Review Copies) have arrived on my doorstep!

So to be entered to win the very first advance copy, make a comment in the comments section and be sure to tell me which reason(s) you want to win a copy!

(If you win and haven't read The Rest Falls Away, the first in the series, and you would rather have that instead, you can let me know when I draw the winner.)

I'll be away until Saturday, so I'll draw a winner late Saturday night or Sunday morning…you have until then to enter to win.

Thanks for visiting my Thursday Thirteen!

Ooo Oooo I’m first! I’m first! Neiner, neiner all you slackers!

I love books about vampires! You didn’t add reason # - I’ve been meaning to buy Colleen’s book and just haven’t gotten to the store yet! :)

Nice TT list this week, Colleen. I hope you have a lovely Thursday.

  2. Christine says:

I would love to read an ARC ~ I’m a voracious reader PLUS a huge fan of historical fiction. If I had to choose from your list I’d say: # 2 & #3. Happy TT from a newbie in the group.

  3. Marcia says:

I am not one for vampire books, but I do admire your networking and publicity skills!!

  4. Kim says:

I am a huge Buffy fan! Great contest idea! Happy TT!!

  5. tvaddictgurl says:

    There are several reasons on the list - 1, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13.

  6. Raggedy says:

I love vampire books and historical fiction. If I had to choose from your list they would be #1, 4 & 6.

Happy TT from another newbie in the group!

  8. Robyn says:

What’s not to like about vampires - I like it that you have changed the setting.

  9. Marg says:

It would be reasons 1, 4 and 5 for me!

  10. May says:

I should win it because I’ve had to wait so long to get my hands on TRFA and it would be really mean to make me wait as long for Rises The Night.

  11. carmen says:

one reason is on your list, because I like Buffy, and the other reason is because I’ll be finished the first one and will want to read more!

  12. meardaba says:

I want to win because I love crushing all the competition!

Kidding, kidding. Actually, I’d like to win a copy of The Rest Falls Away (haven’t read it yet) because I’ve been reading your blog for about a month now and still can’t get my hands on your book (even though I really really want to). I really am looking forward to moving to Toronto and having instant and constant access to new titles.

    *sigh*

Even if I don’t win…congrats, Colleen! ARCs are so exiciting, especially for the second book in a series.

  13. Bonnie Ferguson says:

    My reasons would be 4, 9, 11, and 13! :)

  14. Carl V. says:

What about the ‘you just know that Victoria is a hottie and you need to see more of her’ reason? I could go with many of those reasons. Liking Jane Austen, enjoying Buffy. Please put me in the contest!

  15. principessa says:

Love your new novel and have never read it. Also #1, and 2 for sure.

  16. pearl says:

I love vamps and vampires and would love to read TRFA and # 4 and 5 too.

  17. ellie says:

Your new book is a hit which interests me. # 4 as well.

  18. sharon says:

I have to read TRFA and # 1,2,4 and 5 are a must.

  19. joelle says:

The rest Falls Away is on my list. Love your list above and I agree with #1, and 2, and 4. Your blog is the best.

  20. Diana says:

    I must have… 3,4,6,9,12, and 13, babee!

  21. Scooper says:

I hate the ton, but I loved The Rest Falls Away. I can’t wait until summer for the second installment. If I had to pick reasons from your list I’d pick 1,3,5,6,7,8,9,10.

  22. Annie says:

Oh, Colleen! That’s awesome that you have your ARCs in hand! You have to be so excited!

I’m so excited about reading Rises the Night, for reasons 9-13. Seriously, I know the sequel is going to be great and I’m anxious to read it!

    Happy TT!

  23. Joely says:

I have The Rest Falls Away but haven’t read it yet. I *love* vampires, though, so I’ll go with #1!

  24. Susan Helene Gottfried says:

Can I enter because I loved the review posted for the Debut a Debut contest? (of course, I’ll still need to get my hands on #1 in the series, but that’s a given at this point).

Thanks for stopping by West of Mars — you left your comment just as I was looking you up! Have a great week, and don’t be a stranger.

  25. Gypsy says:

3!! Buffy, Buffy, Buffy! :-) I miss her so. I need a new drug. Or slayer.

  26. diane says:

I would love to read your great novels! I love historical fiction and the settings that you mentioned. # 1,2, 4, 5 are a must for me. Thanks. love your blog.

  27. Cheryl Free says:

I’ve loved vampires since the TV series “Dark Shadows”. I can’t wait to start watching the new series “Blood Ties”. I also love reading about vampires, including all of Anne Rice’s novels. I’m sure yours is just as good - and it’ll be on my vampire reading list ;)

  28. Amy S. says:

    6. If you think a woman should have more than one guy to choose from during her life before settling down (the female protagonist doesn’t make her choice yet!)

  29. Angie says:

Can I create my own reason? Because I just had a long conversation about “ton” and whether or not its needed to be italicized. It is a French word, but it seems to have common usage like “pate”. I noticed you italicized it in number 5 and now I need to read the book and see if it’s italicized in the book. Oh, and reading about Sebastian doesn’t hurt, either :)

  30. An says:

Oooohh… The ARCs are in! My god, that means, if I could win one, I don’t have to wait till June! Oh what a wonderful idea!
I’ve already marked June 2nd in big, large letters on my calendar… Oh boy! I sound like a creepy fangirl…

  31. Jen says:

Oh, I’d say 1, 3, 4, 9, 11, 12, and 13 are all good reasons! I have also never had an ARC, and would love one!!!

  32. Victoria Krain says:

Great TT! Who doesn’t love a good vampire book? :)

  33. Uisce says:

how cool you’ve got books published!! happy TT, mine’s up!

  34. Charity says:

I loved The Rest. I love ARCs. Sign me up!

  35. maggie says:

Great way to use a TT. I love how you combine marketing and fun. Awesome idea.

I never read a vampire book before but historical romance is right up my alley.

My fetish I mean my TT is up.

  36. katkat says:

    Pick Me! Pick Me!
(Jumps up and down with arms waving)

  37. SciFiChick says:

Venice and Rome? Only my 2 favorite places on earth!
I’ve just started The Rest Falls Away.. I have a feeling I’ll get more reading than working done today!

  38. Christine d'Abo says:

I love Max!! So I’d love to win for number 11. I’ll be finishing The Rest Falls Away tonight and I can’t wait. Love, love, love it!

  39. Chelsea says:

I love vampire stories and movies. I was addicted to Buffy and Angel.

Also, I agree Women need choice. There is nothing wrong about having a test drive with a couple of models before deciding which one will be yours.

lastly, I am totally curious about the Rest Falls Away and will have to make a border’s run.

  40. Kai says:

I love historical romances - sounds like you have a wonderful work on your hands. Congrats!

  41. Rachel says:

Reason number 5 for me. I love romance genre but some of the books about the London ton are seriously starting to get to me. Your book has been on my “read” list for a while and I just need some time off.

Think they’ll give me vacation to read?

  42. Janet says:

You forgot one: If you read The Rest Falls Away and and desparately waiting to read more!!!

  43. Cherie Japp says:

I would love to win a copy for reasons 1, 3 and 4.

  44. Anya Bast says:

Hi Colleen — I DON’T want to be entered in the contest. (I’ll buy a copy when it comes it out for sure, though!) Just wanted to let you know that I read The Rest Falls Away and I LOVED it. :)

  45. PRACTiCAL CHiCK says:

Thanks for stopping by my TT! :)

  46. Jill says:

I really always had a fascination with vampire… Anne Rice has became one of my favorite authour, because of the mix of mystery and sensuality…I always like it when a woman is very strenghtfull, and when they are in full possession of their destiny!!! I like even more when its a female hero from time when woman were suppress…But I haven’t read The rest FAlls Away, so I want to read the first tome first…And I woould buy Rises the night later, when it would come out(Do you know if it was translated in french?? I’m so slow in reading in english!!)
And from your reason, here those I like:#1,2.3.5,6and8

  47. Lois says:

numbers 4 and 7 are for me! :)

    Lois

  48. Anni says:

    #1 I love vamps!

oh, and I’ve heard wonderful things about your books, but that wasn’t on the list.

    Congrats on both releases!

  49. Sparky Duck says:

    easiest contest ever, #1!!

  50. Maria Duncan says:

I love Buffy and Jane Austen, and of course this ARC would be very handy when I interview you on my blog. It could be a joint review/interview. Am I convincing you? :)

  51. Kailana says:

My reason for wanting to read this book is easy, reason number 9!

  52. Teresa Warner says:

I love vampire book! I’m always loking for new authors who write about vampires. I have read every one ever written by Feehan and Kenyon. Would love to add your books to my collection. I loved it when Buffy abd Angel were on tv. Miss them both. Although I do own the dvd’s. If I would win I would like to get your first book in the series since I haven’t read it yet. Success on your series.

  53. she says:

found you through Erica and Susan’s Debut a Debut contest and will be on the look out for your books. I adore vampire fiction and after reading Cherie’s review, I’m looking forward to seeing your take on the genre.

  54. Cosmic Kid says:

My excuse? I’ll go crazy if I don’t know what happens next!!!!

  55. Jaci Burton says:

Oooh me me me me me! Do I have to say why? Cuz you know why, right? ;-)

  56. Alyssa Goodnight says:

I would like to win an ARC for reasons
    #4, 5, 6, 7
I have The Rest Falls Away but my reading time has dropped off drastically in the past couple of months…I’m eagerly awaiting the chance to read it. How awesome would it be to have the next book in the series with no waiting?!

  57. Sanjay S says:

Reason I want this book soooo badly - I LOVED reading “The Rest Falls Away” and waiting for RISES THE NIGHT to release may just kill me with the suspense.

  58. Ms. George says:

Well, I am just starting your first novel, but all of the reasons you have listed make me eager to get back to reading and then I’ll be waiting for the new one.
I especially like reasons three-six: Jane Eyre, strong females, someone other than the titled in the lead roles… you’ve got me reading!

  59. Jeanette Jackson says:

I really love books about vampires and would love to win this one.

  60. Jennifer says:

I really liked the rest falls away - and I would like to win a copy of the ARC for all of the reasons!!!! I’m rooting for both Sebastian and Max strangely enough - although Sebastian intrigues me to no end!!! I’m so glad to hear that he has lots of page time!!!!! I am a HUGE BTVS fan, adn Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors. I really like that the heroine is not a whiney, “Save me” victorian girl and that she’s not all caught up in the ton. One of my major reasons I would love to win the ARC is: “If you read The Rest Falls Away and can’t wait for June when Rises the Night will be on the shelves…. (here’s your chance…keep reading for the rules!)” I have and I can’t!! I’ve also met the author and she seems like a very cool person!!!!!

  61. Zeek says:

    ewwww, I’m I too late?

I’m gonna go with ALL OF THE ABOVE!

  62. Vernieda says:

    Oh, an ARC contest!

    Let’s see: #3, #8, #11 (!!) & #13!

  63. Jennifer says:

Sydney Bristow is my hero! :)

  64. ren says:

well, i like vampire books (books about vampires, that is, not books that suck blood) and i am a buffy fan, so there you go.

and for all the other buffy fans: joss whedon is helming a comic book that will be treated as “season 8″ of buffy, revealing what happens to all the slayerettes, buffy, dawn and all the rest of the gang. if you are not a comic reader, but love buffy, i say give it a try. it looks like it will be fun!

  65. ren says:

oops. sorry, somehow i put a the wrong link in the website space…but this is the right one and the wrong one will just show you some pretty literary themed china! so that’s good too!

  66. Kerry D. says:

I’m reading “The Rest Falls Away” right now and thoroughly enjoying myself. (Although it means I haven’t got far enough to make a decision about who to ship for yet, if I do.)

    Reasons 1, 3 (Go Buffy!), 4, 6, 9, 12 and 13 all apply to me.

  67. Rashenbo says:

Looks like the “rest falls away” is a popular book for the debut contest! Already two reviews of it and I picked it up last night at the Borders - it was the last one on the shelves! :)

  68. Dawn says:

How’s this for a reason: You rock! Oh, and because I’m dying to know what that naughty Sebastian’s going to do next, and to learn more about the mysterious Max.

Speaking of Sebastian, you would know his name would be the security word on this post! Ha!

  69. Danny says:

    For me it’s definitely number # 1

  70. Marianne says:

Number 9 - 13 … But mostly #9. This is the reason I usually wait for an entire series to be published before I buy it. I hate waiting!!

  71. Susan says:

How exciting to be an author! My reasons #4, #7, and I’ve never had an ARC before. I’m going to pick up your novel(s) even if I don’t win. :)

  72. Heather Harper says:

Well, I say a big heck yeah for #9.

    Congratulations to the winners!

  73. Alasandra says:

I love to read, I love vampire stories. I need a good book to read while I am recuperating from my cold.
