There are very few authors who are on my auto-buy list. They've had to produce consistently great books for me to place them there.
When I say auto-buy, I mean that: you see the book in the store, or you know it's coming, and you pre-order it or otherwise buy it without hesitation.
You don't look at the back cover copy, you don't read an excerpt, etc., you don't read or wait for reviews…You automatically buy the book.
I've got a few auto-buy authors. JD Robb, Nora Roberts, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jennifer Crusie (when she's writing solo), Liz Carlyle, JK Rowling, to name a few.
These are the writers that I'm really excited about their new books, and I'm at the bookstore the day the book is released.
What about you? Who are yours?

I can only think of 2 off of the top of my head. And these two are definite auto buys. Orson Scott Card and Neil Gaiman. I’ve never been disappointed by either author. As of now, J.K. Rowling is on that list too
We’ll see if she stays there after Harry Potter. By the way, I got my book in the mail today and it’s next on my reading list. Thanks so much! Very cool that you have a friend living around here. I have friends in Laplace as well.

For me that’s also J.K. Rowling… Since short J.R. Ward, and perhaps I can count Lisa Cach in my auto-buy list too :D…

J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter books, of course. I also will rush out and by Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series latest books without hesitation or even opening the front flap. Same goes for Jonathan Kellerman’s Alex Delaware series, Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Series, and Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty series. There’s probably a couple of others I’m forgetting.

My autobuy’s are Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Paula Quinn and now Kim Harrison. Though with two of them going hardback now, it’s not automatic, I usually wait for the sale price, generally a few days after release.

Like everyone else, I’m a slave to JK Rowling. Also Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore.

JR Ward, Kim Harrison and Janet Evanovich (the Plum series only) are my top three autobuys. My semi-auto buys are SEP, Dorothea Benton Frank and Katie MacAlister.

Neil Gaiman, Patricia A. McKillip, John Scalzi, Mike Mignola (for comics)…Jonathan Carroll is almost an auto-buy, Shannon Hale

Repeating a lot of the favorites already listed- JK Rowling, Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas, Laura Lee Guhrke, Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, Ruth Wind/ Barbara Samuel, Bill Bryson. Used to be JD Robb, but I couldn’t justify for hardcovers on the last two. Ditto Laurell Hamilton. Probably Rachel Caine will make the list soon, and possibly Meg Cabot.

JK Rowling of course. Christine Feehan’s Dark series and the sisters serires.
I used to be that way about Dean Koontz and Mary Higgins Clark, but I haven’t had the money to lately.
I would do Nora Roberts, but my mother buys them fairly quickly. There’s no sense in us both getting them because we share books so much.

Some of my auto-buys are Dianne Mott Davidson, Carl Hiaasen, Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, and Jennifer Crusie. But I can’t forget JK Rowling.
Have a great day

Geeze I used to have a LOT more autobuys but many have been weeded out because their work changed so much and thoroughly disappointed … hmm now I’d have to go with Rowling for sure, SEP, Susan Andersen, Ward, Peter David, Lora Leigh, Rene Lyons and now … Colleen Gleason!

A couple of yours — JK Rowling and SEP. But also, Nanci Kincaid, Mary Karr, Robert Jordan (even though he’s taking forever!), Carolyn Haines, Ken Wells, Charlaine Harris.

In addition to all my fellow Wet Noodle Posse members, the auto-buys for me are J.R. Ward and Nevada Barr.

J.K. Rowling and I used to be that way about Dean Koontz and John Grisham. Not so much anymore though.
April 12th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Definitely Marian Keyes. Virginia Henley, Cathy Maxwell, Julia Quinn, Rachel Gibson, Susan Andersen, Catherine Anderson, Patti Berg (if she’d ever write another book!), Jana DeLeon and Harlen Coben and John Irving when they hit paperback. I’d add SEP, Crusie and a few others, but because of my good friend Colleen - I’m an auto borrower on those ones

Definitely Kristopher Reisz, Robin McKinley, JK Rowling, Julie Anne Long, and Margaret Atwood. As you can tell, I love me some YA and feminism.
April 12th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
John Irving, Neil Gaiman, Nora Roberts, Janet Evanovich … hmmmm, I can’t think of any more at the moment. There are a few more!
April 12th, 2007 at 9:48 pm
The latest, JR Ward, joins the distinguished list of Sarah Dunant, Minette Walters, Nelson DeMille, Harlen Coben, Margaret Atwood, Dan Brown, Denis Lehane and that Gleason chick whose next book I’m anxiously waiting for.
April 14th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Jennifer Crusie and Jill Mansell are the only two I can think of, off the top of my head. I don’t preorder anything, but I’ll grab books by those two without reading the back of a book. I’m sure there are more.

I don’t think I can count JK Rowling as an autobuy (or any author who only writes one series). I tend to think of autobuys as someone who I will buy the book, no matter what it’s about, not even looking to see, etc. That isn’t the case with Rowling. I know exactly what her books are about, have known, etc. I mean, NO ONE reads the flaps of Harry Potter novels, do they? It’s not like “Well, I liked 1-6, but I’d better see what this Deathly Hallows thing is about before I plunk down all this cash…” No.
My autobuy is Scott Westerfeld.

Great question. For me, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett are my top autobuys. Then, Stephen King and Dean Koontz are for the most part autobuys, with the odd exception.
