Readers Ask: About the covers

Since I at last have the final cover for The Bleeding Dusk, I thought today would be a good day to answer some common questions people ask about the covers. (Isn't it gorgeous???)

First, let me just say that I can take no credit whatsoever for the cover art. It's the uber-talented Art Department at New American Library that turns out gorgeous, eye-catching covers time and time again.

As many of my friends say, I've been blessed by the cover gods and I'm very thankful.

So, when we start getting ready for a book's artwork, my editor usually asks if I have any ideas of who or what I'd like to see on the cover.

For The Rest Falls Away, I said I'd like to see a woman holding a stake behind her back. I had a totally different image in my head, but what NAL came up with was so much better than I could ever have imagined!

For Rises the Night, my editor thought that Max should be on the cover (she has a thing for Max, and who am I to argue?). So, yes, that's Max on the front of Rises–even though he looks much younger and beaten down than the Max that I picture in my head. (And they didn't show his vis bulla, which I would have liked!)

For The Bleeding Dusk, I don't think I gave any ideas at all, except to suggest that they do something in the background that hinted at the Colosseum or Roman architecture, since the entire book takes place (including one scene at the Colosseum) in Rome. I was asked to give details about Victoria's appearance–hair color, etc., and of course the result is this fabulous cover.

I'm in love with it.

So, which of the three covers do you like the best?

Holy good god — that cover is AMAZING! Gorgeous. Beyond gorgeous.

I would have said cover #1 was my favorite before I saw this one. Now I’m just looking and … yeah, wow.

  2. Dance Chica says:

Ooh, that cover is gorgeous! You certainly are blessed by the cover gods. Bleeding Dusk is definitely my favorite cover so far. It really captures the historical atmosphere.

  3. Marg says:

Blessed by the cover gods is an understatement! Amazing!

  4. Stacy ~ says:

Fabulous cover - you really do have some awesome ones. I can’t wait for this one.

  5. Colleen says:

Meljean, thanks so much! I practically gasped when I first saw it.

Dance Chica, great to see you over here! Hope all is well. I love the atmospheric depiction of the cover too, but I’m pretty sure they didn’t have black lace bustiers in 1820s Europe. :-)
Stacy, Marg, thanks for stopping by!

  6. Sparky Duck says:

Yea this cover is very very very hot.

  7. Bonnie Ferguson says:

    That cover is GORGEOUS! :)

  8. Heather Harper says:

That is the most beautiful cover. I love it. I’ve loved them all, but this one might be my current favorite. It’s so perfect!

  9. janet says:

    It’s a beautiful cover; #1 is my favorite :-)

  10. Kathryn Smith says:

Wow! That’s a gorgeous cover, Colleen! I think #1 is my favorite just because I love the way the stake contrasts with the ballgown, but this cover is going to fly off the shelves! Yay you!

  11. MaryKate says:

Mmmm, I love the new cover. I love how the stake is practically poking you. LOL! Very suggestive…

I have to say Rises the Night is my favorite, even though in general I don’t like naked man chests on my books (only because I think it perpetuates the whole “porn for chicks” thing. But yeah, that boy’s chest is delicious.

You truly are blessed with a fantastic cover department! They truly do justice to the books!

  12. MLS859 says:

Well, I’ve got a thing for Max, too…so I choose RISES as my favorite. But I agree that I see Max a bit older than how he is pictured on the cover.

  13. cosmic kid says:

I think the Bleeding Dusk may be my new favorite cover of yours! The purple is gorgeous, and it flows together really well. Props to the designer for this one!

  14. Carl V. says:

    Yowza! I’m in Lust! ;)
Fantastic cover! You’ve had three great ones so far, you are very fortunate indeed. I am even more excited about reading this one now that I was when I finished Rises!

  15. Janet Mullany says:

LOVE this cover, Colleeen. I think it’s the best of the lot. I particularly like the swirly wotsits bleeding off the right edge.

  16. Esri Rose says:

All the covers have been great and this is no exception, but I still like #1 the best…as someone else said, because of the contrast of the dress and the stake. Seeing those two juxtaposed the first time is a real thrill. This third one has a droll sense to it — she’s holding the stake but also looking ladylike. I also like #1 because of the tilt of the woman (wonderfully uneasy), and because I love that hot, orange-red.

They’ve done a great job with consistency throughout.

  17. Zeek says:

    oooo PRETTY!

  18. Dance Chica says:

“I love the atmospheric depiction of the cover too, but I’m pretty sure they didn’t have black lace bustiers in 1820s Europe.”

LMAO!! True, true. But it makes for very pretty covers, doesn’t it? And it was great seeing you over on my blog, too. :-D

  19. Nancy, aka Bookfool says:

Oh, wow, no kidding on the “blessed by the cover gods” comment. They’re all fabulous. The new one is so pretty! My favorite is the Rises the Night cover, but only because it has a male on the cover. I prefer a hunky guy to a beautiful gal. But, I’ve always loved the way Victoria holds the stake behind her back on the first cover - how cool that the concept was your suggestion!

  20. Sarah says:

I love them all..they’re all so eye catching! :)

  21. David Jebb says:

I love the cover! Very subtle, yet decadent, too. I like all the covers, but think this is my favourite so far.

    Dx

  22. Linda says:

Beautiful cover ! They have all been amazing, though. I get a very Rose McGowan vibe from the beautiful lady on the cover of Bleeding Dusk.

  23. Cory says:

I think I might like this one best, but I won’t know for sure until I’m holding it.

  24. booklogged says:

Oh, my! I like cover 1 and 2 best.

  25. Jaci Burton says:

Yowza! Colleen, that cover is GORGEOUS! You are truly blessed by the cover gods.

Pick a favorite? I’ve always absolutely loved the first book’s cover the best, maybe because it was on the shelf next to mine when our series released together. Heh. No seriously, it’s just such a gorgeous cover, it still remains my favorite.

But this new one? Wow. It’s just spectacular.

  26. Katie says:

WOW! I love the cover! Oh… yeah it’s great. :)

  27. Krista says:

    I love them all - I can’t pick just one :-)
Who is on the “When Twilight Burns” cover?
