At dinner last night, my middle-school-aged daughter was chattering on about how much she loves country music (sorry, but *groan*….that's the one kind of music that just doesn't work for me), and how she wants her dad to listen to this song by Kenny Chesney.
My Music-Snob of a husband said, "I don't listen to music by anyone named Kenny."
And I looked at him and started laughing. Because that's sooo true.
On one of our early dates, I think someone had invited us to a concert that included Kenny G. I thought Music Man was going to die with all that sax going on (I wrote *sax* not *sex* and you know it.)–he just can't stand Kenny G., and that song they play all the time.
(Which song? I don't know. They all sound the same to me. The one with the crooning sax.)
So then we started naming off other Kenny musicians, and there were quite a few of them–all of whom my snobbish MM despises:
- Kenny G.
- Kenny Loggins
- Kenny Rogers
- Kenny Chesney
Sheesh! What is it with Kennys and the cheese?
But I can't point any fingers, because I'm a closet Barry Manilow fan myself. (And yes, that is the second time I've admitted that on this blog.)
So, 'fess up: which music/musician are you a closet-fan for?
(And can someone put the whole gay question to rest for me? Is he or isn't he?)

I think for me mine is probably local music. For me that means celtic music, which is popular in my province. I hate country for the most part, though. And, in everything else, I am rather picky about my music.
And, Barry Manilow looks too perfect to be straight. :p

This is funny because on my personal forum we actually just had a brief discussion about Barry Manilow which actually started out as a conversation about the movie 300 and Gerry Butler (His name was Leo…he was a Spartan…). Anyway, I’m a rock and roll girl from way back and I tend to still prefer that type of music over any other and yet my favorite singer is Brian Kennedy (from Northern Ireland) who is nowhere near a rock and roller. Go figure. As to Mr. Manilow, I was a fan back in the day and I still like some of his music. Is he gay? I think he must be though why he wouldn’t just admit it is beyond me.

I totally agree with the Kenny boycott.
As for my guilty pleasure…Anyone remember Savage Garden? Their songs are just too catchy. I have both of their albums on my iPod
And I secretly respect Kelly Clarkson for saying F.U. to her record label and making the album SHE wanted to make. If only more pop artists did that!

Colleen - I was in Vegas about a year and a half ago, and got over to the Hilton to see “Manilow!” the show. It was seriously fabulous. Here’s what I’ll tell you about Barry:
He’s petite. Seriously petite. Maybe 5′6″.
He’s orange. His spray-on tan is WAY overdone.
He had at least 25 costume changes. All involving sequined jackets (so, I think that puts to rest the gay question).
No wonder he had hip replacement. The pelvic thrusting during Copacabana was quite a sight to behold.
It was a fantastic show. People were on their feet (including me) most of the time. We had a wonderful time!

I actually listen to a lot of country lately. But I can’t stand Kenny Chesney. *g*
I love Savage Garden!!!

I kind of love Kenny Rogers. My other guilty pleasure is Rod Stewart.

wow, never thought about the Kenny connection. guilty pleasure: Brian Setzer (80’s rockabilly) I’ve never actually admitted that to anyone.

I’ve always had to hide my Manilow obsession. Some people, you mention him to them and you get the strangest looks. LOL I received his first song Mandy on a 45 for my 12th birthday. God, that record must be somewhere!!!! And boy, am I old to admit I owned a 45?

Many, many women secretly love Barry. That’s no surprise. My mom loves Barry too. As far as him being gay, the answer is no. I know this, you see, because I am his secret love child. I am still waiting for him to come back from the sequined jacket store. And he will too, you’ll see. Daddy?

Jill, I owned a few 45s myself. Eeek! We’re getting old!
Russ, when you find him, can you get me one of his sequins? I just want to have it.
Deneishia, I like Brian Setzer too. I bought his Christmas album (which my MM also turned his nose up at) and my 6 year old daughter has commandeered it. She listens to it all the time and it drives him bananas! LOL.

I enjoy a lot of Manilow songs. And I never heard anyone dis Brian Setzer, so I don’t think he counts as a guilty pleasure. Dig deeper, kids. I myself am an avid Monkees fan, although not the stuff where Davy sings lead. Give me Micky, baby!
According to AllAnswers.com and a member of his official fan club, Barry is as straight as an arrow: “Just in case you are not aware of it, Barry has answered the “gay” question in the past, and his answer was no. I still have the magazine with the interview/article and Barry’s statement on this issue. I don’t know about you, but if Barry says he isn’t gay that’s good enough for me. Not to mention he was married to a woman, and his relationships with other women (including Linda Allen) have been well documented.”
Here’s the tidbit I enjoyed the most while researching Barry, from his Wikipedia entry:
In 1989, Manilow made headlines again when he told Us Magazine he was hoping for a dinner invitation from his new Bel-Air neighbors, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, but complains they cramp his style of sunbathing in the nude.[50] “I thought it was pretty hot, but there is Secret Service all over the place. I always know when they are coming home because of all the helicopters. If I am out there sunbathing in the nude, I go, ‘S—, the Reagans are coming home.’ But, who knows, maybe they will invite me over for dinner one night.”

Barry is 6ft tall not 5′6 and as for his sequined jackets, they aren’t covered in them but used in a pattern. It is Vegas after all, and no the man’s not gay contrary to what some people believe.
