Friday Night Lights

Got the first DVD in the mail from Netflix the other day and finally watched the first episode.

Is anyone else watching this? I keep hearing how good it is–and I saw the DVDs in the store the other day, and it has a money-back guarantee if you don't like it. Wow. Is that desperation or cockiness?

Anyway, I saw the first episode and knew (spoiler; highlight to read) that Street was going to get majorly injured. So no big surprise there. I wasn't sure whether they were going to win that game or not, and that, just like in real life, had me on the edge of my seat, heart pounding, palms sweating–as if my beloved Michigan was playing. (By the way, that comment does not give anyone license to talk about last week's game, okay?)

But…I haven't felt the urge to pick it back up and watch any other episodes. Hmmm. Should I?

Watching Kyle Chandler is nice though. He has a great voice–almost rivals Alan Rickman's, though it's not quite as rich. I remember Chandler from the television show Homefront, which my Music Man and I absolutely loved. (Anyone remember that?)

So what's the verdict: should I put Friday Night Lights in for my morning treadmill workout (starting next week), or watch Buffy reruns? Or finish HEROES?

Too bad Homefront's not on DVD. That, I would watch.

I have not watched it. The TV people all love the show. I would watch Buffy or Angel re-runs anyday.

  2. Lieke says:

I would watch Buffy reruns AND finish Heroes. There are both really good. Good luck with your workout next week!

  3. MaryKate says:

Ooooh! I ADORE this show! I downloaded it this summer onto my iPod to watch on the way to work everyday. It is simply among the best written, most compelling family dramas out there. It does start a little slowly, but definitely, Colleen, stick with it. On top of it being finely acted and written, enough really can’t be said about Taylor Kitsch (who plays Tim Riggins), he’s a former Abercrombie model, and frankly, is quite the physical specimen. Yes. That makes me a dirty old woman. But I don’t care, he’s gorgeous.

Now, I will say that I am both a southerner and a football fan, so the show goes down pretty easily with me. There are a couple of things that recommend it highly to me. First, it treats issues that teens are facing today fairly. It doesn’t shy away from issues like teen drinking, sex, etc. And it doesn’t give them the Seventh Heave treatment. These kids do bad things. And they suffer for them. I’m not a parent, but it seems to me that this is a show I’d want to watch with my teen, if I had one. Second, it’s finely acted. Both the adults and the kids, many of whom are unknowns, really knock it out of the park.

Colleen, I hope you stick with the show because it really is fantastic.

  4. Kailana says:

I don’t watch this show, or any of the ones mentioned, but I have at least heard of them. :)
I got my bookmarks today! Thank you!

  5. Gypsy says:

OMG, I love this show. LOVE IT. Although, I am from the football-obsessed south, so that might have something to do with it. But it really is wonderful.

  6. Carl V. says:

I know a few people who have watched it or are planning to and have heard nothing but good things. And since football season has begun the timing for watching it couldn’t be more perfect.

  7. Susan says:

I LOVED Homefront. I can’t figure out why it’s not out on DVD. One of the best shows on TV ever.

  8. Sparky Duck says:

I am a Friday Night Lights fan, so I say go for it. Yes, some of the episodes are predictable, but if you like football and have ever seen a crazy home towm, you will like the show. I cant wait for season 2.

so I can’t even say Appalachian State?

  9. Colleen says:

    Sparky: NO.

  10. Sparky Duck says:

Okey Dokey then, not one more mention of the word Mountaineers

  11. Deneishia says:

Buffy and Heroes. I only liked the men on Friday Night Lights and of course that makes it worth watching…so I guess I haven’t really helped huh? LOL Ok Do all three, Heroes first and put in Buffy in between since we all have those memorized ;)

  12. Cory says:

Buffy reruns and Heroes. A friend of mine is probably going to purchase Heroes at some point and I plan to borrow it. I enjoyed the eps I saw!

  13. Colleen says:

Well, that helps. Lots of votes for Buffy (I’m sort of missing her myself; haven’t seen an episode for more than a year).

But I don’t want to give up on FNL quite yet. Argh.

    And Sparky: Grrrrrrrrr.

  14. Sparky Duck says:

just don’t lose to the Ducks this weekend.

  15. Tammy says:

FNL holds up all seaon long - just gets better. Keep going!
How have we NOT mentioned our shared love of Homefront? Have had major Kyle Chandler and John Slattery crushes ever since.

FYI - my verification is Rockley —aahhh, Phillip

  16. Colleen says:

Oh Tammy, I LOOOOVE John Slattery. HAWTness.

    Sparky: Of course not.

  17. Zeek says:

I’ve heard good things about FNL too but only ever watched one or two eps. I’d say finish it since you BOUGHT the dvd’s, lol!

But Buffy reruns are always good (I’m rewatching season 7 … again!) And Heroes, well shoot you HAVE to finish that before the season starts again!!

OH is Homefront the one where he got the newspaper with headlines for the next day or so? I really liked that show too, but couldn’t say that was the title …

  18. Zeek says:

OH I got it now! (thank you google!)

Homefront was the one set in the 40’s right after the war. Yes that WAS good. Couldn’t believe they cancelled that.

“Early Edition” was the one I was thinking of!

  19. Suey says:

I started watching this show last season because of Kyle Chandler, and then got hooked pretty fast. I plan on continuing with it this season…. yep… mostly because of Kyle Chandler!

  20. mikimousey says:

Continue on watching it! I promise you it just gets better! Jane Espenson even recommends Friday Night Lights so Im sure you can hold off on Buffy for now!

  21. Mary says:

I saw the last three episodes on TV and bought the DVDs. I LOVE THIS SHOW. I watch at least one episode a day. It is very REAL.

Yes, I’m from the south, too, but not into football. I’m going to blog about this show tomorrow.
