Need serious recommendations.

I'm married to a Music Man, as you well know. Over the years, he's done much to broaden my horizons musically, even though he's a music snob.

He's introduced me to Jeff Buckley and David Gray and Ben Folds Five and Ray LaMontagne and Sinead Lohan–and some of my other favorites.

But I always like it when I find someone before he does, someone that he actually likes (unlike Dave Matthews, which I originally found, or Maroon 5, The Fray, and Nickelback, at whom he rolls his eyes).

Some of my successes (and believe me, I keep track of them) are The Red House Painters, The White Stripes, Liz Phair and James Blunt (although the rolling of the eyes is beginning to commence with Mr. Blunt).

Anyway, so it's time for me to find some other new artist that I'm going to like–someone along the lines of some I've listed above.

So I'm looking for suggestions. Anyone?

What are you listening to that I might like?

  1. Mary says:

My son has me listening to Arcade Fire. He also likes Wilco.

  2. MLS859 (Lynn) says:

You already mentioned two of my favorites — Maroon 5 an Nickelback. My forty-something self also likes Fall Out Boy for some inexplicable reason — and I also like Daughtry (I don’t have his CD — yet — but I’ve liked every single one of his singles). Of course, I (like everyone probably!) have a musical aberration — someone whose music isn’t usually my cup of tea — an Irish singer named Brian Kennedy who I adore.

  3. MaryKate says:

I’m SO going to the Maroon 5 concert in DC on Tuesday! Yay! It’ll be me, my roomie and a bunch of 13 YO girls. We don’t care. Adam Levine (lead singer) is HAWT! ;o)

I have two college aged nieces, and every time they’re home on break, I get them make me a “hipness playlist.” Because I never aged musically beyond about age 15 and I have very “poppy” music tastes.

I do like Regina Spektor, do you listen to her? She’s probably passe now, but I still enjoy her stuff quite a bit.

It goes to show how sophisticated I am, this morning on the Metro ride in, I listened to Justin Timberlake.

See? You probably shouldn’t listen to any of my recs!

    My current reccomendations:
    1. Arcade Fire (the song Keep the Car Running is brilliant)
    2. Brandi Carlile (LOVE the album The Story)
    3. The Format
    4. Jack’s Mannequin
    5. Paramore (a little punky, but a FIERCE female vocalist)
    6. SUFJAN STEVENS! (Michigan native…featured heavily in “Little Miss Sunshine”)
    7. Ted Leo & the Pharmacists (The album Shake the Sheets is awesome)

I guarantee that these are all really talented arists. :)

  5. Janet says:

    My Chemical Romance :-)

  6. lisabea says:

    SUFJAN STEVENS? I second that!
    Death Cab for Cutie
I just heard Hurt live and accoustic and they were phenomenal.
    Kings of Leon

  8. ren says:

i’ll second death cab for cutie and throw in the postal service (same vocalist), and i love the new pornographers, the national, the polyphonic spree, and, if you wanna go old skool you can’t miss with nick drake, or even older, django reinhardt.

  9. Tammy says:

God, I feel so old…and so out of it. Other than the ones Colleen mentioned, I haven’t heard of any of these groups/people.

I remember when Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello were cutting-edge subversive. Ahhhh, them were the days!

Security word: Rockley….ohhhh Phillip, how I love thee

  10. Chris says:

OK! One of my absolute favorite bands is a band by the name of Ours. The lead singer was an acquaintance of Jeff Buckley’s and he has that same beautiful tone to his voice. I’ve seen them live many times and they’re just amazing. Their first album “Distorted Lullabies” always blows me away and I must have listened to it 1000 times. You have to give them a shot! Their third album should be out soon.

My favorite band is Radiohead…don’t know if you listen to them much or not, but they’re quite eclectic and are in a league of their own. Very forward sounding music.

I have to agree with all of the other Sufjan Stevens fans too! Love him!

  11. Jennifer says:

For mellow, sultry, maybe try Suzie Suh.

  12. Megan says:

New Pornographers, Kate Nash (not out here yet), Alice Smith (coming out soon).

Especially try kate Nash; her song “Dickhead,” on YouTube is amazing.

And the new Cat Power is good. She does all covers on this one, previously a tortured indie rock chick, now tapped to play a Lagerfeld show.

More later, I got lots, I think!

  13. Sparky Duck says:

My Chemical Romance is great and dark
Feist, I am liking them right now, though I can not take credit for discovering them, thats all Ali Martels fault

  14. Chris says:

Oooh, great one Sparky Duck! I love Feist. Leslie Feist has one of the most beautiful voices out there right now. Her new album, The Reminder is amazing. Definitely a must have!

  15. Deneishia says:

    Jesca Hoop - http://www.jescahoop.com

    Eve to Adam - http://www.evetoadam.com

    Emerson Hart - emersonhart.musiccitynetworks.com

  16. Colleen says:

Okay!! I’ve lined up all of these suggestions on my Rhapsody library and made a nice little playlist! We’ll see what sticks.

Thanks so much for all the recs. I can’t wait to give them a listen and shock and awe my Music Man with my new musical taste. :-)

  17. Emily says:

Matchbox 20 is my absolute favorite. I’m also listening to A Fine Frenzy, which is more mellow than the name would lead to believe. *LoL* I second whoever said Regina Spektor as well.

  18. outburst says:

    Lou Rhodes.
You can’t go wrong with her.
    http://www.myspace.com/lourhodes

  19. Gypsy says:

    Scissor Sisters
    Over the Rhine
    Imogen Heap
    Amel Larrieux
    Citizen Cope

  20. Bronwyn Green says:

Hey Colleen…so I’m late with this but if you and your boy aren’t familiar with these already…

Damien Rice - brilliant, broody Irishman
Ani Difrance - stunning guitar work and lyrics that will stay with you for days.
    Kate Rusby - Celtic folk
Dar Williams - fabulous folk with a wry sense of humor
Susan McKeown - more Celtic folk with some jazz undertones

  21. Susan Dunlap says:

Oh God, I have so many bands and artists that I love, but here are a few of my old (and new) favorites:

Anything by the Cocteau Twins (truly unique, beautiful in their own right, and my fave band of all time)

    Dead Can Dance
    Kate Bush
    Stellamara
    West Indian Girl
    New Pornographers
    Elliott Smith
    Patrick Watson
    M83
    Sigur Ros
    Nick Drake
    Type O Negative
    Iron & Wine

I could honestly go on here forever, but that’s just a sampling. I can’t wait until February 5th arrives, I am chomping at the bit to read the newest book!!! :-)
