No indeed.
When a movie that's slated to be released at the end of the year, during Oscar season, amid all the other big blockbuster-wanna-bes, suddenly gets shunted to…ugh….end of February, one can only say, "Yikes."
How bad can it be?
It must be reallllllly bad.
After all, February and March are the bad times for movie releases (good times for book releases, though…hint, hint)–it's after the Oscar rush, before the big summer releases.
So, it's a bummer that the movie's that bad. Don't think I'll be seeing it–Eric Bana doesn't really do that much for me, and although I like Scarjo (mainly 'cause the girl has curves and isn't an emaciated paper doll *cough*KeiraKnightley*cough*).
And really, Eric Bana had no business playing the running-to-fat, pus-running-down-gouted-leg Henry VIII. I'm sorry, but that was poor casting in the extreme.
I've read one Philippa Gregory book–The Queen's Fool–and I enjoyed it (although I thought the love story/romance between the "fool" and her eventual husband was unrealistic, tacked on, and clumsy). I haven't read any other Gregory books, though everyone says The Other Boleyn Girl is the best.
So maybe I'll read it instead of watch it.
So, what do you think? Will you see the flick? Have you read the book?
And, since there's now suddenly a total glut of Tudor-set historical fiction…how do you feel about that? Tired of it? Want a different time period explored?
(Why can't someone do a series like that about Eleanor of Aquitaine? I would glom that up in a heartbeat.)
Oh, wait. Someone did. Roberta Gellis. The Roselynde Chronicles. Sexier than the Gregory books (wayy sexier), with more fictional elements, but…damn, they're some of my favorite books. Ever.

The second installment of the Gardella Vampire Chronicles takes Victoria to Venice and Rome.

Oh, I love me some court intrigue, so for sure I’ll see it. I loved The Other Boleyn Girl. And I loved Showtime’s The Tudors. I love trashy costume dramas though.
I think you’re looking at this whole thing wrong, Colleen, who cares whether Eric Bana was good casting…look how pretty.

I’ll probably go see it, even though I don’t care for Phillipa Gregory (call me a nut, but I don’t like seeing some of my favorite historical figures turned into two-dimensional soap opera characters before my very eyes), because there are costumes and Scarlet. I swear, I’m 100% straight, but I have the biggest girl crush on her, LOL. She’s so pretty, I just want to be her!

I’m with you on the Tudors; I went through that phase in my teens and early twenties, so I’m kind of over it now.
I totally agree with you about Eleanor of Aquitaine. What an incredible woman! Have you read Sharon Kay Penman’s novels about the Plantagenets? I’ve read the first (When Christ and His Saints Slept); the second, Time and Chance, is in my TBR pile.

Well, I’m a card-carrying member of the Richard III Society so every time I hear the word “Tudor”, I think “propaganda”. Still, I love history…but that’s not what you asked. Will I go see it? I doubt it but simply because I very seldom see movies in the theater. This year I’ve seen three - the rest I just wait until I can watch in the privacy of my own home.

What a terrible poster. Whoever designed their marketing campaign stinks. That’s the only thing I really have to interject here. It seems like so many movies have terrible marketing lately…”Michael Clayton” anyone? I still have no idea what that movie is about other than George Clooney is in it.

I really enjoyed reading “The Other Boleyn Girl”. I do like historical romance
I was looking forward to seeing the movie, but didn’t really like the casting. Henry VIII was a redhead, for God’s sake!! Eleanor wood be an excellent movie idea. What a lady!!!!

Ok, this book has been selling like hot cakes at the store because of the movie. I haven’t had it in me to read it. Maybe I’ll give it a go. I won’t see the movie…can anyone say “Marie Antoinette”? *ugh*

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! I brought in the mail and to my astonishment there was book 3 written by my favorite vampire author. You ruined me for Meyer’s vampire series. Only read one and couldn’t go on. I found them wimpy and adolescent compared to yours. I’m in the middle of 2 fat books and wondering if I’ll pick them back up again if I read yours first. OR should I use your’s to prompt me to read faster so I can to your’s. Oh, decisions!
About The Other Boleyn, I’ll probably skip it. I did enjoy the book, but have liked others of hers better.
In case I haven’t mentioned it earlier. You are awesome! In writing this comment I’ve decided to read your book after finishing my other 2, that will make the time a little closer to the books release. That way the book will be people’s minds.

I will probably see it because I have read the book. I am pretty tired of the Tudors, though.
BTW, I have my post up for my contest.

I definately won’t be seeing this. Not because I don’t like period dramas. But, because I don’t like any of the 3 leads in the movie.
I did see Elizabeth: The Golden Age and loved it !! But, to me Cate Blanchett can do no wrong.

Its not a romantic type comedy is it? Somehow I doubt it

I am looking forward to reading some Gregory books in 2008. I had no idea that this was being made into a movie though.

I’m still holding out hope for this one and will probably see it when it comes out unless it gets really, really panned by critics I trust when it comes out. Bana doesn’t do anything for me at all, I think he is a terrible actor, but I love the women in this.

I read the bood and couldn’t put it down. I LOVED it! I’ll probably read it again just before I go see the movie, and I never read a book twice. I can’t wait to see the movie. Very believable book, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the movie follows the story. Good drama, great suspense, awesome happily-ever-after love story, and I’ve very easily bored.
