Every year about this time, People magazine puts out its SMA issue. (SMA=Sexiest Man Alive)
I can't always say that I agree with their choices, but as time goes on, I've realized that it's just as much political choice as it is a "sexy" choice.
In other words, I might think Sting is the SMA (although Clive's coming up fast), but that doesn't mean that he's the right choice for People. The guy has to be extremely visible, big-screen, A-list, and not have made an idiot out of himself. *cough*TomCruise*cough* It helps if he has other things going for him, besides looks and A-list Status, too.
Let's take a look at the last four years:
Johnny Depp (2003)
Jude Law (2004)
Matthew McConaughey (2005)
George Clooney (2006)
So who's it going to be for 2007?
Unfortunately, I don't think it'll be Gerard Butler or Clive Owen (now don't get your panties in a wad, ladies….it's not because they aren't worthy! It's because they aren't big enough, or have enough exposure at this time).
My vote is Matt Damon (he's become HUGE with the Bourne franchise and his philanthropic work, and he's married and has a kid….a very good option, if you see what I mean). It's the right time for him. He's just exploded this year.
And he's hothothot.
So, looking at the Big Picture–who's been in the headlines, the spotlight, who hasn't embarrassed himself or done anything stupid….who do you think People will pick?
And then, who do you pick…just for you. Your SMA. *wink* You know what I mean.

I love the rugged men, and Clive & Gerard are my choices as well. You know, Gerard is in a new romantic kinda movie with Hilary Swank called “P.S. I Love You” that might really get his name out there -at least with the women

Yeah, all the Gerry fans have been waiting (so far, in vain) for him to be on the list but, no, I don’t think it will happen unless he strikes a bigger nerve (PEOPLE obviously doesn’t care about my nerve). Hmmm…I can’t think of anyone out there who does it for me AND who’s “big” enough to make the cut.

Hmm, interesting question. I think Matt might be a good call. Or possibly Denzel. He’s got a big movie coming out and sometimes these things correspond.
But I think you’re probably right, Matt. My George can’t win it every year.

Oh, the other contender that’s possible is Will Smith. Forgot to mention him–he’s got that really big movie I AM LEGEND coming.
He’s my second guess.
But I’m rooting for Matt. He’s got it all. And, did I mention he’s HOT?

Colleen - Have you ever seen George and Brad tease Matt about not getting Sexiest Man? They are both 2 time winners, and they’re constantly giving him a hard time about “if you ran a better campaign, you’d probably get it. It’s hilarious.

Personally, I’ve never really seen the appeal of Matthew McConaughey. Then again, I can’t think of him without thinking about his infamous naked bongo playing incident in Austin, Texas.

Matthew McConaughey is too much of a flake. Just say no to the bongo’s. I’d love to see Matt Damon win. Funny this has come up since I’m almost finished with Sexiest Man Alive by Diana Holquist.

I am drawing a complete blank on who’s been “hot” this year. I’d say that Matt Damon, should have a shot. What with the success of the Bourne movies. And, the fact that he is sexy !
And, I choose Tom Welling as my SMA. He is almost too sexy !!

Ok I’m with Janet…SEBASTIAN! ok and in “Real World” voting…Matt is most likely the man, I was thinking about Will Smith…he’s not big enough this year and It might just be Johnny again with the whole Pirates trilogy over this year and Sweeney Todd…His kid was sick this year AND he finally married his woman….hmmm
