Help from the peanut gallery?

Lots of you have asked how I get the titles for my books. The simple answer is: brainstorming.

So, here's your chance to be in on the ground floor!

My editor let me know we need to come up with a title for the fifth and final book about Victoria Gardella. I'm thinking it ought to have something more…optimistic…in the title than some of the past ones, since it's the end of the series.

Something maybe with "moon" or "dawn" or "light" or something.

Any ideas?

Here's what we've had in the series so far:

THE REST FALLS AWAY

RISES THE NIGHT (my favorite title)

THE BLEEDING DUSK

WHEN TWILIGHT BURNS

Okay, lay'em on me.

Wasn’t the first one a quote from something? Do we need to stick with literary references?

    Choose the Dawn
    Choosing the Dawn

I’m thinking of the poem from which you got the first title.

  2. zeek says:

Red Dawn? Just kidding. I suck at this.

I do love your titles so far!

(I finished Rises! Oh MAX! You’re KILLING me here, Colleen! I’ll get my review up as soon as I get the chance!!)

  3. Colleen says:

    Love those, Esri. Thanks!

Zeek, I suck at this too. That’s why I’m asking for help. :-D

Glad you finished RISES. I’ll look forward to the review.

  4. zeek says:

Team Max all the way, Baby! ;)

  5. zeek says:

And I’m very much looking forward to Bleeding Dusk!

  6. marykate says:

I am possibly the least creative person on the planet. But I’m a really good “oooh-er” so I’m sure I’ll have a reaction for you when you come up with something!

Somehow my spam foiler is now ALWAYS MaxBaby. I love that!

  7. MLS859 (Lynn) says:

Okay, here’s a first “stab” at it:

    “Where Light in Darkness Lies”

    From William Shakespeare’s LOVE’S LABOR”S LOST:

    “Light, seeking light, doth light of light beguile;
So ere you find where light in darkness lies,
Your light grows dark by losing of your eyes.”

  8. marykate says:

    Ooooh! Lynn, that’s awesome!

See? Told ya, I’m only good for cheering!

  9. Kristin says:

I know that Stephenie Meyer’s last book in her Twilight series is called “Breaking Dawn” - just thought I would throw that out there. Lynn’s idea is awesome. As I’m lying around sick today(my third day home with bronchitis/flu) I’ll try to think of ideas - though my brain is feeling more than a little fuzzy! :( I enjoyed reading all the comments on Romance Novel TV yesterday. I love all the Max/Sebastian discussion. As I’ve said before I was always Max all the way, but was really drawn to Sebastian, but I think I might just be the one that TBD made me move toward Sebastian!(MaryKate isn’t going to like that!):)

  10. stargazer says:

    Traces of MoonLight

    In the Braking Dawn….He waits

    Where the Moonlight ends.

    Moonlight without Judement

  11. Amanda says:

While bored at work, here’s what I’ve come up with…

    The Awakening Dawn
    The Awakening Light
    Dawn Light Awakening
High Stakes at Dawn (I think this one is kind of funny)
    Silence by the Light
    The Ardent Dawn
    In Pursuit of Dawn
    Undertaking Before Dawn
    Crossing the Light
    Origin of Light
    The Sharp Dawn
    The Promising Light

    I really like Lynn’s!

  12. Esri Rose says:

I like Amanda’s “The Ardent Dawn” and “The Sharp Dawn,” particularly the latter. Colleen, I’m guessing you’re not going to go for anything over three words unless it REALLY wows you. And even then, your publisher might not go for it. Is that correct?

  13. Colleen says:

These are all great! I’m compiling a list of my favorites and will send them to my editor on Monday, so suggestions are welcome until then.

Esri, you’re right in that we’d probably keep the title within three/four words, just for consistency.

  14. Amanda says:

I love the first title ‘The Rest Falls Away”. I love how the title and the quote is absolutely dead on for the book.

  15. J says:

Ok here’s my “stab” at it:
    Wager the Dawn
    Dawn of new Light
    Fracture of Light
    Dawns a new day

    I’ll keep thinking after work:-)

  16. Gannon says:

Okay, now that I’ve gotten to know you a little over at RNTV, Colleeen, I’ve followed you “home”–so to speak! My creativity may be lacking, but I’ll give it a go.

    How about:

    Awakened By The Dawn
    Claiming The Light
    When Dawn Claims The Night

    I love Lynn’s title!

  17. Janet says:

In honor of the eclipse last night, “Red Moon Rising”.

  18. Jill says:

    When Moonlight Falls
    When Dawn Arises
    Dawn Victorious

  19. David Jebb says:

Love Lynn’s suggestion, too! Fits perfectly into the series, I think!

I like the idea of dawn or morning, to round off the series. How about:
    The Edge of Morning,

Victoria is coming to the end of her quest and we get to see the outcome of her Max/ Sebastian relationship triangle. I for one can’t wait but am also a bit disappointed there is an end.

    *Goes off in a huff!*

    David

  20. Tori Lennox says:

I have a horrible time coming up with titles. There’s a reason why mine get called by the hero/heroine’s names for the longest time. :)

  21. Colleen says:

Wow! You guys are good! I’m glad my editor will be the one picking from the list…there are too many here that I like.

Now…to get back to my work–WRITING the actual BOOK.

  22. Kristin says:

    Beyond The Dawn

  23. Michelle (MG) says:

    When Moonlight Dawns
    Dawn After Moonlight
Dawn of a New Day (sorry, couldn’t resist LOL)

  24. Amanda says:

    Though of another…

    By Dawn’s Grace

I don’t know about the apostrophe (sp?) in the title. Hmm….

  25. terrio says:

Oh, I love this sort of thing. Can a pirate play with vampires? LOL! Love Lynn’s but I’ll try some.

    Dawn Chases the Moon
    Moonlight Falls Away
Dawn Breaks (but too much like that other I guess)
    Into the Light
    Night Fades

Well, that’s all I got right now.

  26. Suzanne says:

    First Break of Dawn
    First Light of Dawn
    First Flush of Dawn
    Daylight Breaks
    Dawns a New Day
    Tides of the Moon
    The Light of Dawn
    Prelude of the Day/Dawn/Light
    Until Sunrise

  27. Dorothea says:

    How about: Light from Shadows?

  28. Kristin says:

Terrio - really like The Night Fades. I was thinking about Into The Light, but then Poltergiest popped into my head “Carol Ann come into the light” or something! :) Seeking The Light is ok. I’ve seen a funny one or two - Dawn Becomes Her could fall into that catergory. :)

  29. Jambrea says:

Here are a few. I’m not sure if I repeated any. :)

    New Dawn Rising
    A Light in the Dark
    Rising of the Moon
    Rising of the Light
    Dark to Light
    Dawn Comes but Once
    Dawn Raising
    Day in the Night
    Dusk of Tomorrow
    Tomorrow’s Light

  30. J says:

Wow, I like “Light from Shadows” But didn’t someone else call a book that?
Some others that I thought of are:

Breath of new light or Breath of new dawn.
    Breath of Dawn
    Dawn of the moonless night
    Rises the Dawn
    Guardian of the Night
    Guardian of Light
    Guardian of Dawn
    Proves the Dawn
    Dawn of lights Hope
    Dawn of new Hope
With Dawn comes the Light (ok that is 5 words)

Well Coll, You have a really interesting decision. Good Luck and congrats on continued success.

    J.

  31. J says:

    One last thought:

    Comes the Light……

    J

  32. J says:

    Ok, last one:

    Comes the Dawn….

    J

  33. stargazer says:

    The Brith of Moonlight
    Moonlight Cometh
    Moonbeams in Twlight
    Death by the Frist Light
    Mesmerized by Moonlight

    This is FUN!

  34. J says:

    Awakens the Dawn.
    Dawn Awakens
    Dawns Awakening

  35. MLS859 (Lynn) says:

    Between Dusk and Dawn
    The Blushing Dawn
    The Gathering Dawn
    The Glimmering Dawn
    The Beckoning Dawn

  36. ren says:

“before the dawn” as in “it’s always darkest…before the dawn” since we know the battle is not over but the light is going to break through…eventually.

i think the previous title are fairly simple language (not in a simple=stupid way, in a simple=clean and modern way) and it would be good to stick with that style.

  37. Kristin says:

    The Dawning Light

  38. Deneishia says:

oh titles so give me fits. I keep thinking of John Muir:”it’s always sunrise somewhere” LOL any way er…um
    When Moonlight Dawns
    The Midnight Sun
    As Shadow Fades
    No Waning Moon
    Shall Moonlight Rise
    The Moonlit Dawn
    Dominion of Dawn

I’m sure others will come today

  39. Kaitlin says:

Hmm….I suck at titles too, but here’s my best shot. :)

    Silent Dawn Arising
    Dawn’s Light Burning (or Burns)
    Passion Light Awakening
    The Burning Light Awakes

These are just a few. Hope you find one you like. :D

  40. Andrea says:

    Here are a few…

    At the Break of Dawn
    The Break of Dawn
    When Dawn Breaks
    Break of Dawn

  41. Deneishia says:

can you call it “buy this book right now?” no? oh ok…”we conquered and kicked butt?” ok well, um had a few more then

    When Dawn Breaks
    By Moonlit Shadow
    Where Moonlight Reigns
    Prevailing Dawn

  42. Andrea says:

    Thought of a couple more…

    In Dawn’s Early Light
    Dawn’s Early Light

  43. Susan J Dunlap says:

God, there’s so many good ones here but I’m going to try and take a stab at it (no pun intendeed there-ha ha!!)

    Everlasting Dawn
    In the Shadow of Daylight
    The Infinite Light
    The Ascending Sun (or Dawn)
    Cast Down All Shadows
    Where Shadows Fade
    The Sun Will Ever Rise

Well, those are just a few for now, but I’ll be back if I think of any more!! :-)
