Drew is the new Meg.

My daughter popped the soundtrack for Music & Lyrics into the car CD player this morning, with two results: 1) putting the "Pop! Goes My Heart" earworm firmly into my conscious, and 2) reminding me of a blog post I'd been meaning to write.

Have you seen Music & Lyrics with Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant? If not, I recommend it. I loved it (except for the very last cheesy song that Hugh Grant sings at the big concert…), and let my daughter watch it because it's a very mild PG-13 rating.

(*Pop! Goes My Heart*)

Drew plays a slightly ditzy but long-winded, organized-in-a-weird-way character who meets Hugh Grant (a washed up '80s star) when she goes to water his plants. In that very first scene, it occurred to me that Drew's character (blanking on the name and too lazy to Google it) was a lot like that of Sally Albright.

When Harry Met Sally… is one of my all-time favorite romantic comedies. (In fact, I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to watch that one.) And now that Meg Ryan isn't right for those kinds of roles, it feels to me as if Drew is the heir apparent to the perky, funny, sincere type of character that Meg used to play.

Yes? No?

Favorite Meg Ryan flick? Favorite Drew flick?  I'm listening.

…And while we're at it…favorite Hugh Grant movie? My daughter thinks he's adorable, and I'd like to let her see another one…but not Four Weddings & A Funeral. Other suggestions?

(*I thought I'd never fall in love again / but then / Pop! Goes my hearttttt….*)

I loved that movie but 50 First Dates was even better. Adam Sandler can be annoying at times but Drew was so good as a girl who starts everyday not remembering the day before.

  2. Colleen says:

Oh yeah!! My daughter looooves 50 First Dates. I think Sandler and Barrymore are great together, in that and in The Wedding Singer.

I don’t know if my daughter has seen The Wedding Singer. She’s so into ’80s music, she might really like it.

Favorite Meg movie: French Kiss (though it was close, I almost said Joe vs. the Volcano:)
Favorite Drew movie: Never Been Kissed

Is it ironic both have “kiss” in the title?

Favorite Huge movie: this is hard…Love Actually, About a Boy, Two Weeks Notice, Notting Hill…hmm…I think I have to go with Two Weeks Notice

  4. AmandaG says:

I forgot about About a Boy! I was going to say my favorite Hugh movie is Notting Hill (I think he’s so adorable when he brings Julia Roberts’ character to meet his friends) but my fav is About a Boy. Fantastic movie. “No man is an island…”

Drew: When I was going through my teen/angstish type thing I saw Mad Love and went crazy over the movie. Now? Not as much. I think Charlie’s Angels was a fun movie. 50 First Dates is prob my fav. (Guess I could’ve just said that instead of going on and on.)

Meg: You’ve Got Mail. I LOVE that movie.

  5. Michelle (MG) says:

Favourite Meg movie - Probably When Harry Met Sally, although I just love her in anything.

Favourite Hugh movie - Notting Hill

Favourite Drew movie - hmm, not sure maybe The Wedding Singer

  6. Heather says:

Favorite Meg movie is definitely French Kiss. Followed closely by When Harry Met Sally.

Drew? I’d have to say The Wedding Singer. I just love 80s music too!

Favorite Hugh…probably Bridget Jones’s Diary. He was so delightfully smarmy in that one!

  7. Colleen says:

Was About a Boy a romantic comedy? I haven’t seen that one.

I didn’t like French Kiss that well, although I adore whatshisname. What is his name? Sheesh. I’m totally brain-dead today.

  8. Lynn Irwin Stewart says:

    Favorite Meg: You’ve Got Mail

    Favorite Drew: The Wedding Singer

    Favorite Hugh: Sense and Sensibility

  9. Cory says:

Meg: French Kiss. I LOVED that movie.

    Drew: Charlie’s Angels

    I actually haven’t watched many of Hugh’s movies…I should though…

  10. marykate says:

I didn’t like French Kiss that well, although I adore whatshisname. What is his name?

Kevin Kline. I love him. In everything!!

Favorite Meg Movie: When Harry Met Sally (please it’s probably my favorite movie of all time)
Favorite Drew Movie: Never Been Kissed
Favorite Hugh movie: Bridget Jones’s Diary (I loved Hugh being a scoundrel).

  11. Cheryl says:

I loved ‘About A Boy”….my absolute favorite. Watch it first before exposing E…however, I think it is pretty tame and definitely a good uplifting movie. It makes me laugh. Its not a romantic comedy, though.

Notting Hill was good too, light and fluffy. I think I own them all…..I might as well be 13 again, he is so cute. Bridget Jones was funny. I liked his character in that one too.

I agree about Drew. She is soooo cute too. I love the Wedding Singer and 50 first dates.

As far as Meg goes, I also liked City of Angels. I was out of my Meg phase as was I think the rest of the country when that one came out, but like Nicholas Cage so it was a keeper.

My all time favorite actor is John Cusak and I still revert back to Gross Pointe Blank (because of the Detroit connection) and High Fidelity to pick me up and make me feel young again.

I am certainly giving away my age with these references.

By the way, happy early birthday. Today is the first day of spring, so we Taurus’ are happy again.

  12. Jenny Ryan says:

I really liked that movie. I love seeing Hugh Grant make fun of himself.

  13. ren says:

hmmm…i do like all of those actors but i guess i have different favorites

meg ryan: “I.Q.” (which is very sweet and maybe appropriate for your daughter
drew barrymore: home fries (with the lovely luke wilson) not appropriate for a kid, but no one mentioned “everafter’, which is beautiful and perfect for a young woman

and my favorite hugh grant is terribly under rated but he is great in “extreme measures” but it is in NO WAY for a younger person, but “sense and sensiblilty” sure is.

and as far as kevin kline goes, true acting genius and the best pirate king ever! (if you can find a recording of him in “pirates of penzance” it is well worth it!)

  14. Sandy says:

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen it, but “The Englishman who goes up a hill, but comes down a mountain” is a cute movie. Very English (hence, my type of humor). The movie title lasts forever, but it’s still good.

  15. rej says:

Favorite movies by particular actors can be difficult to select, especially when they done both serious and comedic parts.
    Meg Ryan: City of Angels
Drew Barrymore: Riding in Cars with Boys (2001)
Hugh Grant: It’s a toss up between two lesser known films - Impromptu (1991) and An Awfully Big Adventure (1995)

Of course About a Boy is one of the very best and shows that Grant can play someone different than the characters in FFWF and Notting Hill. However, of his comedy roles, I must admit I have a soft spot in my heart for Alex Fletcher (Music and Lyrics)

  16. Lynn Irwin Stewart says:

Oh, I forgot about EVERAFTER — love it and Dougray Scott was adorable!

  17. mazoku says:

    Hmm, this is hard… >___

  18. mazoku says:

Hmm, I have the odd feeling of having done something wrong…my post disappeared! T_T
Hugh Grant: About a boy, Two weeks notice, Bridget Jones’s diary (both of them)
Meg Ryan: City of Angels, Kate&Leopold was not bad
Drew Barrymore: Music&Lyrics, 50 First Dates

  19. Suzanne says:

Oh, yes! I loved Music and Lyrics.

Favorite Drew = Donnie Darko, though I have a special place in my heart for Ever After.

Favorite Meg = When Harry Met Sally. Really, how can the rest compare? Looove it.

Favorite Hugh = Love Actually or Sense & Sensibility. Also loved About a Boy and Bridget Jones’ Diary and Two Weeks Notice. Oh, man. I love most of his movies.

I’d say that of those, Sense & Sensibility is definitely ok for kids to watch.

  20. Deneishia says:

OH love them both so much. Drew: never been kissed and Ever after. but riding in cars with boys reminds me so much of my Mother LOL it’s so awesome.

Hugh: knotting hill, Love Actually but again I’d watch him show up to a screening he’s so “brill” as my 8 year old cousin says

  21. Andrea says:

I want to see Music and Lyrics!!

    Favorite Drew movie? Ever After

Favorite Meg movie? You’ve Got Mail

Favorite Hugh movie? Sense & Sensibility

  22. Mary says:

See, I didn’t think there was enough conflict in this movie. It was okay, but really, what was keeping them apart?

I love Hugh in everything. Drew….anything but Home Fries, Riding in Cars and Boys on the Side.

    Meg….the Presidio and DOA.

  23. orannia says:

I think my favourite Meg Ryan movie is When Harry Met Sally. I actually only saw it when I was in my late 20s (in my first year in the UK). I had a friend who LOVED it and wouldn’t stop nagging me until I’d seen it. (I also loved Carrie Fisher in this movie).

Favourite Drew movie…probably The Wedding Singer (I haven’t seen Music & Lyrics yet). Favourite Hugh Grant movie…well, I think it would have to be Love Actually. I loved that movie! (And I’m still gutted the sweet woman who was in love with one of the IT guys at her work didn’t get her HEA).

    orannia

  24. Di says:

I do this silly “Monday Meandering” thing on my blog. And it brought me to you. Sorry, but Hugh leaves me cold…now Hugh LAURIE…that’s another matter. I would say my favorite Drew is 50 First Dates.

  25. Stephanie says:

I agree with the commenter who suggested About a Boy - it is an endearing movie and Hugh Grant is wonderful in it. I also love him in Sense and Sensability.

  26. stephanie says:

Sorry this is late, but I’m just now getting around to blog hopping!!

Favorite Hugh movie: Toss up between About a Boy and Love, Actually. Both are utterly fantastic!

Favorite Meg: Sleepless in Seattle. Makes me cry every time.

Favorite Drew movie: The Wedding Singer. But Donnie Darko is probably my all-time favorite movie, and she has a very small, but very relavent part.
