The Mighty Opes.

So, uh…do you worship at the altar of the Mighty Oprah?

I've never been able to get into her show (of course, after years of working in an office during the day, I never had the chance to see it…and now, well, it just doesn't appeal to me).

I've looked through her magazine a few times too. Meh. It's all right.

But she appeals to lots of people. And now with her Big Give…well, where do you weigh in?

What do you think of the Mighty Opes?

Hmm. Haven’t watched The Big Give. I used to be a big Oprah fan but not so much now. She’s gotten too big and sometimes I think she’s lost touch with reality.

  2. Shahenda says:

I like her as a person. I think she has made a difference in the world but I wish she would do more for the US. Sometimes she takes credit for these big giveaways when in fact she had nothing to do with it but give it away on her show. The majority of the stuff she gives away is donated by different companies.
I HATE her mag. it is so boring. I can’t comment on her show the Big Give but I plan on watching it on ABC.com just to see what all the hype is about.

I am definitely jealous of her wealth!

  3. Kristin says:

Nope, never have been a fan…I remember being aware of her weight ups and downs and that she had a bunch of dogs and that she and Stedman are not married…that’s it. ;)

I’ll admit it. If I’m home on a weekday, I watch if she has a big star on. But anymore, even the big star shows, she only does like half an hour with them, and then she does something ridiculous like a home makeover or something. Meh.

    I much prefer Ellen.

  5. Rachel says:

Meh. That’s my general feeling about Oprah. I think she does put ehr money where her mouth is a lot of the time, but I think she’s very self-satisfied with her own generosity which… kinda defeats the purpose of the generosity. That said, I do think her Book Club is cool, despite the flack it gets. Not all of the books are for me, but some of the ones she picks (Pillars of the Earth, Fall On Your Knees, White Oleander, Night) have ended up being favorites. Plus, as a former English teacher, anything that makes people read= awesome.

  6. Tori Lennox says:

I think she’s a very generous person, but her book club sucks. *g*

  7. Lynn Irwin Stewart says:

Very interesting question. I used to watch her every day — no matter what the subject was. But, over time, I only watched if something interested me. And I’ve found that less and less she talks about interests me — but then I’ve changed in that regard a lot (so it’s me, not her).

I think she is a generous person but I also think she enjoys tooting her own horn and that gets old after awhile. I think she enjoys the “power” she has (but who wouldn’t?). And, to be honest, anytime a celeb starts in with politics, I pretty much tune out immediately, no matter who it is or who they support.

As for her bookclub, I agree that anything that gets people reading is a good thing. But most of the books she chooses don’t interest me. I’ve read a few of them and couldn’t even tell you, now, what they were. I do have PILLARS OF THE EARTH (haven’t read it yet) but I already had it because I love anything medieval so it had nothing to do with her.

I think the last Oprah show I watched all the way through was the one with the Osmonds. I was a huge fan (way) back in the day and it was fun to see them all together.

  8. Dorothea says:

Never was really into Oprah, and personally don’t like her picks for her book club. I do agree anything to get people to read is a good idea though. I prefer to watch the court shows (people’s court, Judge Judy, etc.) because you can learn more about how people are really like, not what is portrayed on talk shows like Oprah

  9. Sarah says:

I do watch sometimes, depending on who’s on her show, but I haven’t watched the big give, nor do I want to. I’m not totally anti-oprah but I am definitely NOT a fan. Her book club just isn’t for me, either.

  10. Michelle (MG) says:

I’ve never been a huge Oprah fan. Back in the day I loved Rosie, although she became rather bitter towards the end. Like someone else mentioned I find Oprah very self-satisfied. That’s a very good way to describe it. Now, IF, I have time I’d watch Ellen. I’m not a huge tv person anyway.

What the Big Give? Is it another show?

  11. ren says:

    she yells too much.

  12. AmandaG says:

I watched the first twenty minutes of The Big Give and it just seemed wrong. No more tuning in. But I do watch Here Come the Newlyweds after that show. Funny. How much of a say does she really have in any of these things that go on? The shows, magazines, radio & network? I saw an episode of her show where she went to check out an apartment of these people who live next to her studio. She just “stopped by” (I’m sure a producer or someone came in before hand.) I thought it was a cute segment.

  13. Carl V. says:

Not a fan. I give her props for doing her thing, but it just isn’t my thing.

  14. Deneishia says:

ok, i’ll give her props on her generosity but that woman stands on my nerves and grinds into them with her high heel shoe!
