Monday Roundup

So like a fool, I waited until 8:30 last night to go see The Dark Knight (for an 8:50 showing). Tickets were sold out.

I think I must be the only person in the US who wanted to see it and didn't over the weekend. Pfflbt.

Sometime this week, though. For sure.

I've heard nothing but raves from everyone who's seen it, so I can't imagine I'll be disappointed. I don't have huge expectations (I mean, I'm not a big Batman fangrrrl–I just want to see the movie because of all the buzz).

Now, about Mamma Mia. I'm debating about whether to let my almost-twelve year old go see it. I've seen the stage play, and so I know the basic story. The movie's rated PG-13. Has anyone seen it? Any thoughts on an impressionable almost-twelve-year-old seeing it? I know she's going to love the music, but I want to know how intense the storyline about the oops-who's-my-father–and-how-did- you-get-in-this-situation-anyway, Ma?" element is. I mean, I know it's there, but how deep does it go?

In other news, I'm winning the battle with the Japanese beetles that have found the delicacy known as my raspberry bushes. And, to my delight, I picked a small bowl of them this morning. (The berries, not the beetles.)

It's getting close to the release of When Twilight Burns…and I've got a lot of blog appearances and giveaways lined up. (Check my website to see if I'm coming to a town near you…or order your own signed copy from me!)

Stay tuned and I'll let you know more details…but in the meantime, if you know of a blog or website that gets decent traffic and would like to give away a book in the Gardella series….send'em my way. They don't have to be a book site!

I saw Mamma Mia yesterday. I don’t think that there is anything objectionable in there. There’s some innuendo, but I doubt there’s anything your daughter might find embarrassing, except you know, the incredibly high cheese content, and that fact that her mom is singing along to EVERY. SINGLE. SONG. Or, maybe that was just me.

I didn’t see it yet, either. The dh hurt his back Friday night and ruined the whole plan. The boy is going to see it tonight, so maybe the dh and I can see it when the boy goes to journalism camp this week.

I saw Mamma Mia! over the weekend and enjoyed it. As far as your daughter is concerned, I would say that there is less direct/crass verbal references to sex than in Grease, but there are a couple of songs that are sexually-charged, but, again, not anymore than Grease, I don’t think. For example, there is a song between the two kids getting married that I would equate to “The One That I Want” in Grease. There is also a scene where there is a reference to how many men her mother slept with (given that she doesn’t know who the father is). Finally, there is one scene in which Christine Baranski has a couple of crass moments that are visual rather than verbal. I think if you’d let her watch Grease though, she should be fine with Mamma Mia! too.

Finally, I also wanted to comment on a blog you did a few weeks ago - about how James McAvoy doesn’t “do it” for you. I totally agree with you there, but I watched the movie “Penelope” (with Christina Ricci, Reese Witherspoon, and James McAvoy) over the weekend, and LOVED it! And, even though he still doesn’t “do it” for me, I enjoyed McAvoy more in this (than say in Becoming Jane - haven’t seen Atonement yet). The movie was very cute and McAvoy was very believable. The movie is a fairy tell, which I love, so maybe that’s why I enjoyed it so much, but check it out if you get a chance!

Excuse me, can’t type - mean “fairy TALE,” not “tell.”

Colleen-I’ve got a book site and my usual site. I’d love to give away a signed copy. Does that mean I’d get one too? :) Just curious. :)
Had a good weekend. Tired. Sinus headache from hell kind of made it not so good, but I’m moving on. :D

You’re going to be over at the DIK ladies blog soon, right? I’m part of that one. Yeah, how did that happen? LOL! I love it there though. You should have a lot of fun while you’re there. We love our authors. :D
