It was that we already sort of knew we’d be adopting a puppy today. (I got lots of emails and Twitters from people saying “Don’t do it!!”)
See, we have a 7 year old German Shepherd. She’s our second GSD and we got her when our first one was about 10, and really slowing down.
But last summer we were going to get a second dog…but we never found a breeder or a place that we felt comfortable with. So it’s just been sort of simmering there, waiting for the “right” time.
And it so happened to be yesterday. My daughter (who never reads the paper) just happened to see an ad for GSD puppies, in the town next to us, and since my Music Man and I had taken the day off to hang with the kiddos (on the lake at some friends’ house), we thought we’d pop by and see the pups.
All was well. We had good vibes, liked the pups, liked the parents and the setup of the breeder…and all my daughters had to do was look up at Music Man with their big blue (or brown) eyes and he was done for.
Plus he can’t resist a puppy anyway.
So we’re going to pick up Frodo (great name, huh?) today…he’s nine weeks old and just adorable. I’ll post pics when I get them.
So wish me luck.
Oh, wait…I’m the one leaving for my booktour this weekend. *mwhahahaha*
Wish Music Man luck!

I’m a huge dog lover — we have five — and am “babysitting” one for my daughter (I call her my granddog). I’m very much into rescuing dogs (all but my 11 year old Boston is a rescue). It’s absolutely staggering how many dogs and cats are euthanized (including purebreds)across this country every single day. I certainly don’t blame anyone for wanting a brand new purebred puppy — they are adorable — but I wish everyone who purchases a purebred puppy could also rescue a homeless, doomed animal as well. Sorry…this is one of my soapbox issues!!

PUPPEEEEZZZ!!!! Aww, who doesn’t love them and their little puppy breath and little puppy tail wags? I have three dogs and one is a German Shep/Chow mix. I’m very envious of you, but at the same time not. I got a new puppy once a year for three years in a row (the last was a rescue and was not supposed to stay) and those were some not fun times. Lucky you to be out of the house the first weekend, you know for your book promotion and all… not for getting out of puppy duty.

Lynn, I feel the same way.

I love DOGS! I have an American iskimo…all white and fluffy.
Good luck with the new puppy…they are sooo cute.
What did you name it??

Lynn and AmandaG….I also agree about the rescue dogs. We’ve rescued a Great Dane and also a German Shepherd in the past…and we tried to rescue another GSD last year, but someone else got to the one we wanted first.
We sort of explained to the kids that we’d know when the right dog came along–either through a rescue or otherwise.

lol, guess that worked out well didn’t it (you leaving town). Well congrats on your newest addition to your family. I love German Shepherds (I grew up with them as a kid)…great dogs! Anyway, have fun on your booktour!

Colleen, I hope I didn’t come across as too strident — it’s just a subject near and dear to my heart. I guess I’m either too impatient or too nuts to wait for the “right” dog. I’m more of an immediate yes-that’s-the-one type — and I’ve never been disappointed. Every dog we have now or have had in the past has fit right in with very little effort. It’s almost always the humans who have all the angst!!

Ooooh, I’m glad you got a new puppy! Can’t wait to see pics. I’m kind of wishing for a new kitten to entertain us, although the old girl would probably object (as in “eat the kitten”).
Sorry so slow (we’ve had a couple of really crap weeks and things are going to actually get worse until someone kills my sister), but I just finally managed to post a review of When Twilight Burns. I LOVED it, as always!!!!!

I would love to get a dog, but I’m so not allowed. Maybe one day I’ll win my husband over…

Oh, I love GSD puppies: they’ve got those huge paws and ears, LOL!!
We haven’t had dogs in the past 10 years or so, since we started developing the ninja cats horde…but I’m still hoping I’ll manage to sneak in a Rott sooner or later: we’ll only need to teach him to meow, and hope it’ll fool the ninja cats!!

Awwwww…
A GSD puppy!! (Immediate flash back to when my Riley first came home…)
I envy you. Truly. Puppies are work and I tend to say they’re something you survive but still.
My advice having been through the battles with two GSD puppies - get a crate and be prepared to a constant battle of wills. They will test you like you wouldn’t believe.
And, there’s always Cesar: Excercise, discipline, and affection.
Congrats! I love the name and as someone who is on her third GSD - I truly envy you!
