At last.

Today’s the day! If you’re American, get out and exercise your right to vote!

Then come back and let us know what it was like–long lines? Lots of people? What was the mood? How long did you wait?

Come on…even you lurkers out there! Tell us how it felt today.

(If you’re not sure how to add a comment, just click on the link at the bottom of this post where it says “_ Others Joined Her in the Spotlight.”)

Music Man and I will be taking the children to breakfast and then to vote with us, after the early morning rush has died down. It’s a family tradition. Will report back after.

We got there just as polls opened at 7, and the lines were already around the building. BUT our polling place was super efficient, and we got out in under an hour! I was amazed, especially since we waited for nearly 4 hours in 2004.

I thought it was AWESOME to see such a huge turn-out! And everyone seemed excited and happy despite the “sardine can” feeling, ha ha! What a wonderful country we live in to have such a peaceful transition of power…

  2. Colleen says:

Now you’ve got me all teary-eyed. Thanks Rachel!

  3. Literary Feline says:

I actually voted by absentee ballot early last month, and thankfully haven’t had to deal with the crowds that even the early poll voters have had to. I drove by the registrar of voter’s office yesterday and couldn’t believe the amount of people lined up around the building, all hoping to beat today’s rush. I’ll be curious to know from my friends and coworkers today if the early voting eased the numbers at all today.

  4. Andrea says:

We voted early last month and it was a very short wait. ;)

  5. Cory says:

There was a line here, but it moved fairly quickly. There was NO WHERE to park, so I ended up parking a few streets away at the college campus. But even including the time to walk to and from my car I didn’t spend 30 minutes on voting.
Everyone seemed very positive this morning, and apparently the turn out there was much higher than normal. One lady said she had been voting there for 35 years, and this was the first time she had seen a line!

  6. Janet says:

I got there at about 8:55 AM; there were no lines and lots of parking. I walked right in, got my ballot, walked right over to a non-curtained voting booth (hence no pictures) and voted my little heart out. As I submitted it, I looked to see what number my vote was…342 in the A-L section of my precinct. Woohoo!

  7. Kati says:

Not too awful for me. I got there about 6:20am and I waited about an hour and 45 minutes. I had my iPod and was listening to Imitation in Death by JD Robb. Eve Dallas solved the case just as I got to the front of the line. So it was all good.

  8. Colleen says:

We got there with the kids about 11am. After driving by a polling place with the line out the door, we weren’t sure what to expect.

But when we got there, although the parking lot was full, there wasn’t really a line. A lot of people (a lot more than usual), but no real line. So it was quick and smooth.

The officials told me that there was a really long line this morning, though.

Yay! Music Man, the kids and I are all wearing “I VOTED” stickers.

  9. Steph Anderson says:

Well, if you had a last name in L-Z your line was short, but this Anderson had to wait in a pretty long line. I think my favorite part of voting was the fact that it was SO beautiful that I could ride my bicycle to the polls with no coat on!

I wasn’t too concerned with the line though, since I’m currently DEVOURING the book “Harry, A History” and it gave me an excuse to read that for an hour or so.

Oh…and no cookies at my polling site. WTF? I was hoping for some sugar!

  10. Valereie says:

Hubby and I arrived at the polls right before they opened at 6am. We live in Louisiana. The line was shockingly long…100 or more people. But it only took about 45 minutes to be able to vote. We luckily had a good neighbor in line in front of us…so we chatted the whole time. I’m so glad I got it over with so early. I was so excited about the whole thing that I got up with my husband and drank coffee before going to vote. Normally, I am not a morning person.

Steph, what is this about cookies at the polling place….do they normally give out goodies?

  11. LindaK says:

I voted around 10:30 and was in and out in about 5 minutes. I live in a very small town, so I wasn’t expecting any lines. I took my youngest in with me, she wanted to see what all the fuss was about :) I think that she was a wee bit disappointed, there weren’t fireworks or something along those lines.

  12. Lisa Trevethan says:

Got to the polls at 8:00 and got out at 10:20. It was pretty crazy but well worth it.

  13. Cheryl says:

We were in and out at 11 am. The workers said it had been an hectic morning and since the rush it had been steady. It was very inspirational.

  14. Renee says:

I went early to vote this morning. Lots of people in the parking lot. I thought I had to wait awhile. There was only one person ahead of me in my street line! Got out of there in 10 minutes!

  15. Jane says:

I went during the early afternoon, so I was in and out in fifteen minutes. The lady said it was real crowded in the morning. The workers would cheer whenever there was a first time voter.

  16. Holli says:

At 2:30 pm, it took us about 15 minutes. I vote in a township where they are expecting about 90 percent turn-out. Wow!

  17. Lisa says:

In at 7:23 out at 7:51. I took the Pirate (age 3) and the Bug (6 months). I was #114.

  18. Cathy says:

Our Voting place is in a school, so I waited until I knew the Kids would be in Class to go. When I got there I was surprised to see a line (Ok, one Person in line in front of me, but hey, it’s still a line :P). All together I think I spent less time voting than walking the three blocks to the school. Then again, I knew all the issues and already knew what i was voting on them, and I only voted for three of the 7 offices (Not Counting President) Since none of the other 4 Offices had any Candidates that i thought were qualified.

  19. Kristin says:

My neighbor, oldest son and I voted at just after 10:00 this morning…in and out in a flash. The school was having a bake sale to help send the kids to camp…filled up on goodies(since today is Hubby’s B-day the treats were perfect)! :) Hubby went a little after 4:00 and it was in and out for him, too. So now he can enjoy his B-day beer and treats in front of the TV! :)

  20. Kristin says:

P.S. Noticed the “ASF” cover on your first page!!! :) Voting would have been a lot more fun if Sebastian & Max would have been candidates(hope you find the humor in that)!!! ;)

  21. stargazer says:

I voted before work today. I had to wait about 25 mins. I wore my sticker all day, and told my workers to GO VOTE!!!! smiles*
and Yah the New Cover is HOT!!!!
    Sena

  22. Cathy says:

Well, Congratulations to all those who Voted for Sen. Obama. My Candidate may Not have won, but I still believe he would Make a Great President. And atleast it’s not Hillary Clinton, so I Don’t have to Move to Canada, although I may Have to Move out of California if they Pass that rediculous Proposition that Makes Discrimination Legal.

  23. Suzanne Musin says:

We didn’t have a wait at all! Arrived at 4:30pm and went right up to the tables. By the time we left, there was a line since people were just getting off of work. Yay for avoiding the rush!
