I just finished after an all day read-a-thon, so I’ll have more to say later after my thoughts have been collected a little more, but for now, let me just contribute this:
SQUEEEEE! VICTORIA+MAX 4-EVA!
Ahem. Okay, so I’ll go come up with some more scholarly things to say.
August 5th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Yeah, well, Max has a few things to say about that, doesn’t he? LOL.
August 5th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Loved the book! The ending left me a bit sad though as I was rooting for Sebastian. Aside from that, I enjoyed When Twilight Burns.
And now I must go lick my wounds, lol!
August 5th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
True, that, Colleen! But I’m sure Max will come around to shipping Victoria and … um… himself.
He’s a smart guy, that Max! Seriously, though, brava on writibg one of the best love triangles I’ve read. There’s a love triangle in the YA fantasy trilogy I’ve been writing (which- shameless self promotion/congratulations- just sold! All 3! Yay!), and I’ve really kept Max/Victoria/Sebastian in mind. So thanks!
August 5th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
The ending left me very sad, I wanted Sebastian to win.
August 5th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Have to admit that I was very pleased with the Max result and would have been unhappy with Sebastian being her first choice. I felt that the way that Colleen wrote the character didn’t ultimately make him the kind of person that could be trusted to commit to the kind of relationship that Victoria seemed to be craving. Picking Sebastian, again in my opinion, wouldn’t have been in keeping with the character that Victoria has grown in to over the course of the past 3, now 4, novels. I would have personally felt betrayed if it had ended up any other way…at least in regards to the way Colleen set up the story in Twilight. I just didn’t see Sebastian making the changes in his personality that would have made him the convincing choice.
That isn’t to say I didn’t feel saddened by it…that was one of the delicious dilemmas of the entire book, the idea that I liked both characters and even though I preferred Max because he made more ’sense’ to me I still very much enjoy Sebastian as a character and will continue to do so, assuming he is a force to be reckoned with in As Shadows Fade.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
First, allow me to give off a giant fangrrrl SQUEE to have Victoria and Max together. Colleen has intelligently avoided the throw down I threatened her with about 6 months ago. OK, she always knew it would be Max, but still. So, GO TEAM MAX.
But Carl, I agree with you. I love that Sebastian has such questionable loyalties — I think it’s what makes him an intriguing character. I think it’s also what makes him an inappropriate hero choice. He’s loyal to himself and to Victoria, but I’m not sure what else. And I’m still not completely convinced that he’s an honorable man.
All that being said, I’m still very interested to see what happens with Sebastian. I can’t see him just riding off into the sunset. Given the huge number of Sebastian fans out there, I’d love to see Colleen give him a really kicka** resolution.
And then there’s Max. I can’t wait to see Victoria take him down a peg. He needs it. Badly.
August 5th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
YAY! MAX!!!!!!!!!! Please tell me that He and Victoria work it out and end up having a Dozen Fiesty Daughters to take over the Family Business! Oh! And who is going to be after Victoria, since it says on your website that As Shadows Fade is Victoria’s last Book? You Can’t just end the series there, some one else has to be next, either one of the Gardella Women we’ve already heard about, or one of Max and Victoria’s Daughters!
August 6th, 2008 at 11:56 am
So I have to say that I was actually surprised that Max and Victoria even got together in the book at all. It had been built up for so long that toward the beginning I was swearing she would be with Sebastian; because of the way it kept swinging back and forth.
But I was rooting for Max so I was squeeling like a little fan girl when the decision was made. I cannot wait for the last book now; there’s so much that still has to be said and I loved how Max just didn’t give into Victoria. That would be outside his character. Just like I thought it would have been if Victoria really did choose Sebastian. Without trust and just based on the lust that Colleen protrayed Victoria to only have for Sebastian, it would’ve felt off the mark. I was extremely happy with this.
August 6th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
I haven’t read the book yet, but I can’t resist spoilers and I’m extremely happy about the outcome of the love triangle. Go Team Max.
August 6th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Go Team Max!! I’m so happy that my man won. MK, you are so right. I cannot wait to Victoria to knock Max off his high horse. Oh, it’ll be sooo good!
August 6th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Yayyyy Max!!
And now with the teaser exerpt I’ve got to worry about Wayren!!! I love love love the entire series though. And now I have got to go get some sleep.
I’ve been rooting for him all along. But, dang it I’m tired today. I stayed up entirely too late finishing this book and was dragging at work all day…..lol BOO HOO now I have to wait forever for the next book. Patience is most definately not a virtue of mine
August 6th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
YAY Max! I have also been rooting for him and Victoria to get together, especially after that first kiss…Thank you Colleen for matching these two!
<3

Well, to deal with the obvious - I am thrilled it’s Max and I agree with what Carl said. Sebastian, as adorable as he is, just wasn’t a good fit for Victoria.
But, beyond that, I can honestly say this one was worth waiting for. Colleen, you tied everything up brilliantly! And that scene between Max and Victoria… oh my! I fell in love with the two of them being together all over again.
And my final comment for now - I did feel sorry for Sebastian, not because he lost but because he’s alone. He needs to find someone other than Victoria.
I literally could not put this one down. I only half paid attention to the Tigers game tonight (not that they’re worth paying attention to…) and I’ve read every spare minute I’ve had here at work.
Bloody good job, Colleen!

I was at B & N Monday night right before they closed and found that they had already put up ‘When Twlight Burns’. I’ve been waiting impatiently for this book so getting it one day early was AMAZING!
Let’s just say that I was bleary eyed to work the next day and not regreting a single minute of missed sleep.
Max! Max! Max! Yay! I wanted to cheer. I felt really bad for Sebastian but Max just obssesses me. When he finally gets together with Victoria - I just wanted it to last for a few chapters at least. There was so much tension between those too leading up to this. Sigh….
August 7th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Yay Max! I’m soo happy they finally got together. Their scene was amazing. Max’s perspective after they were together was hilarious. I loved how he was kicking himself for finally giving in and being ’such a weak bloody fool’. It shows that his exceptional self control is crumbling when it comes to Vic.:) I agree that he needs to get kicked off his high horse once and for all…by Vic!
I felt pretty bad for poor Sebastian.Even if I didn’t want him and Vic together, I hope he gets a happy ending.
I can’t wait to find out what Wayren is!
August 7th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Squeeeeeeeeee!! Go Team Max!!
Needless to say, I was pleased with who Victoria ended up with.
ITA with Carl and MK. Very well said you two. I have to say that when I read the title for Chapter 22, I smiled and thought, “This is it! This is it!”
Best. Fight scene. Ever. *sigh*
Thank you, Colleen. Thank you.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
I can’t tell you how long I waited to write that particular CHAPTER 22 scene…and how I worried over whether it would “work” or not. I think I mentioned it in a blog post sometime last fall, something about an important scene that I’d been waiting to write.
And I cried when I wrote the part about Sebastian, too. He is heartbroken, but he’s man enough to accept it. At least until the next book.
August 7th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Thank you so much for all the kudos! I’m glad to hear from both the Sebastian lovers and the Max lovers…thanks for coming by! I’ll keep checking back for more updates.
August 8th, 2008 at 6:10 am
Colleen -
The scene was perfect. It not only worked, but it worked amazingly well. The characters stayed true to themselves, which is important, and you gave those of us who’ve been waiting for the question to be settled the perfect answer.
And, if I may say so, you wrote the “intimate details” extremely well. You didn’t bludgeon us over the heads with graphic details and yet… oh my. Like I said, it made me fall in love with them being together all over again.

I’ve read the scene with Max and Victoria atleast a dozen times now, and so far it’s my Favorite scene in the entire series. I Hope the Chemistry between the two of them Sizzles even more in As Shadows Fade!
August 9th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
AHAHAHA!!!
I never paid attention to Max’s character (kind of liked Sebastian) but i love love how it all played out. Can we get short story about Max’s point of view about how he feel in love? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 9th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
I thought that I would be fine with whomever Victoria ultimately chose, but after letting the book settle in these past few days, I actually do have a preference- for Sebastian. (Ducking the knives.) Max’s feigned indifference and continued emotional detachment just irked me. Okay I admit I enjoyed the tension and ultimate showdown between Max and Victoria, but it’s Sebastian’s humanness that I love and the fact that he is trying to be a better man for her. I want to see some golden Gardella babies!
August 9th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
I nearly stopped breathing when Max had his “conversation” with Wayren because that was the first time he acknowledged any sort of feelings towards Victoria. And then their love scene. Christ. I love how it started off as angry!sex and grew into something more tame, but not one bit less passionate. I love this love triangle, but I love an eventual Max/Victoria ending more, if you must indeed end it.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Twilight was definitely my favorite of the series. When I first read it, I wanted Sebastian, but gradually as things changed and the whole no-trust thing, I was like hey, you need a man. That man is Max. Love chapter 22. Couldn’t have been more perfectly executed.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
I literally did my little happy-dance on the sofa when Max and Victoria finally got together. Awesome fight-scene, and the morning after scene was also very enjoyable. Yay Team Max! It’s quite clear that he loves Victoria, he just so caught up in his brooding and self-sacrifice to realize that he’s the right man for her.
Also, Colleen writes truly nail-biting finales. In every book her end-of-book action set-piece has had me nearly holding my breath with excitement, and she keeps ramping it up more and more for each book. I thought the end of The Bleeding Dusk was tense, but this topped it. I’m not sure my poor heart will be able to take whatever she no doubt has saved for As Shadows Fade.
August 10th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Ever since Max and Victoria met I wanted them together. But I also like Sebastian and now I feel sad for him but happy for Max. Except he wont show it yet.
I cannot wait until As Shadows Fade. It’s killing me already I have to wait so long.
August 11th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Just finished reading the book this morning and I woke up early to do it. Funny thing is, I stopped at Bleeding Dusk at 4am this morning, fingered the pages of Twilight and then pushed myself to go to sleep until 10am this morning. Now, I’m just angry I have to wait until March to read the final book because I’m so in love with these characters, I just NEED to know what happens next. My heart wrenched when Philip was killed in the first book, then stopped when Eustacia got her head sliced right off with not even a body to show for it, then when there is a body to show for it it’s all mutilated and what not as is the case with Byriyani and so forth.
“And I cried when I wrote the part about Sebastian, too. He is heartbroken, but he’s man enough to accept it. At least until the next book.” - Colleen
Please tell me that’s not a foreshadow of more self-sacrificing we’ll be seeing. I have had enough of matyrs for the last few books and my sensibilities can’t take it anymore. Darn you for being such a good writer, Colleen!
As for the case in Sebastian v.s. Max, I will admit that I was one of the very few who hoped she didn’t really have to choose and that the three of them would live happily ever after slaying vampires. =X Now that we know whom Victoria truly loves, my heart breaks for Sebastian.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Wow, I just have to say I LOVED this book. Frustrated that I have to wait until spring for the final book (sad that it’s the last one too), but nevertheless, I am so very pleased with the end result of the book. I’m rooting for Max, and I have been since the beginning! There is just something about him that I find so intriguing, and he seems to bring the best out of Victoria.
This series is more then just your typical romance. It’s so much more with the realistic complex characters, the compelling plot—it all just bundles into one terrific story that leaves me wanting more! So needless to say, I’m very happy with how the book ended.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Colleen as a Seb fan I have to admit that I also cried when he came to the realization that Victoria did not love him. I could feel his heart breaking. Eventhough I knew he wasn’t the right man for her I still had hope that she would decide to be with him. I love/hate the cliffhanger at the end but that is just because it is going to be hard to wait until March to find out what happens. Needless to say I have read 9 books this summer (adult and children) and this was by far the best!!! You have a gift for writing and it I couldn’t put it down. Thanks for another great vampire story!
August 12th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Nah nah! I know something you all don’t know! I know Wayren’s Origins! Colleen said I was the Only person to figure it out, so I guess I will be the Only one who doesn’t have to wait till March and As Shadows Fade to learn the Truth!
August 13th, 2008 at 12:14 am
Hooray for Max! But I am so sad for Sebastian, I mean poor guy he really loves her. I just can’t see him walking away just like that without a fight. At least I hope he doesn’t.
Colleen, you did a great job! You totally left me wanting MORE! I need MORE! lol And now I have to wait until next year?? **SWOONS** I cannot wait for the next book and the fact that it’s the last book saddens me so much. I am going to miss not reading about Victora’s adventures. You made such unforgettable characters Colleen, KUDOS!!
August 14th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Yay Victoria and Max! The bloody idiot. Loved his little speech at the end about how he didn’t want to fall in love, but he did and how he wants to be with her, but he won’t. StupidStupidStupid. Cannot wait for his fall.
But poor Sebastian. How he loves Victoria. It was so sad when he saved her from drowning and the realization that came from her actions. Sad!
So my question is what was the metal that went into Max’s ribs by Sara during the fire? He was so dazed after, what happened to him while the others were fighting? Was it nothing? Or something? Did I miss the explanation?
August 15th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Amanda, if you reread the carriage scene that starts the next chapter I think you’ll get your answers. It was a knife that she used to prod him in the ribs to get him to go with her.
August 16th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Way to go Colleen! I’ve been rooting for Max all along and was pleased with the results in this book. I’m sure though that there are more surprises in store for us.
When I finished the book last night, my first remark to my husband is, darn I’ve got to wait to next year to continue this story.
Also wanted to let you know I had to fight my husband for the book. He thought he would also start reading it when I wasn’t. I put that to a end as I’m a faster reader and he keep borrowing it. Therefore, I took it to work as I found it hard to put down and read it on my lunch hours which went too quickly.
August 18th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Oddly enough I was rooting for Sebastian even though his loyalties are iffy and his ethics a little questionable. I think his heart was in the right place and well…Max just doesn’t do it all sulky and in the shadows, macho..alpha wannabe…anyway…now that he’s in the light more and being focused on…perhaps his true nature will shine since before it was all about keeping his distance from Victoria.
August 18th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Thanks Colleen for another great book. Can I just say WOW! There were a lot of suprises ~ sadly Briyani being killed by vampires; Victoria having to stake her friend Gwendolyn ~ although she totally deserved it; Kritanu almost being killed ~ sliced into pieces, and then Victoria breaking Sebastian’s heart! Crap, I just love Max, but a love triangle. I picked up the book on Saturday, read into the wee morning hours, then read almost all day on Sunday again until the wee hours. My head has been spinning ever since.
August 24th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
From Alice-” Please tell me that’s not a foreshadow of more self-sacrificing we’ll be seeing.”
Ay Dios mio. I liked how Sebastian bowed out gracefully and I hope he is able to find happiness somewhere else. Though I’m a way bigger fan of Sebastian than Max, I knew when Victoria had to question whether or not she would care if Sebastian was left in the burning building the way she did with Max, that Sebastian was better off without Victoria. That scene left no question in my mind about the triangle and when Victoria finally made her decision, I was able to sigh in relief.
I’m sad for Sebastian because he’s lost the two women he loved. One to death and the other to someone else, but I have faith that he can pick up and move on, without becoming self-sacrificing, or pitiful. And in my imagination he’s already found someone who will love him for the deliciously lovable man he is. :p
September 1st, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I’ve been so worried that Victoria would choose Sebastian, that it took me nearly a month to actually read the book! Luckily, I wasn’t heartbroken at the ending.
While I like Sebastian, he just doesn’t know how to let Victoria be. Which, sadly, is something that Victoria is going to have to learn with Max. But I can’t wait to see how the learn to work together, and accept each other.
Also, even knowing the series didn’t end in this month, I was totally not expecting Victoria to fight off her vampire taint. And Gwen as a traitor was a total surpirse.
Congrats on another terrific novel Colleen!!!
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:30 pm
I’ve been on Team Max since he made his first appearance…and I’ve been waiting for this, shall we say, togetherness for a long time…however, there’s a whole other book to go and I’m not entirely convinced that what we’ve just read is what we’re going to get…
September 21st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I did not finish the book till last week, but I absolutely loved it. I love Max and the scene at the Masked Ball, when he dances with Victoria. Hee, hee.
I have to say, this series just keeps getting better and better. Why does it have to end? And, I’m probably wrong, but… I think I might have an idea about what Wayren is. Just because of something she said about Sebastian. It would make sense why she has such a motherly feel and the whole warmth thing. Hm…
But I didn’t think about the fact that Sebastian might try to win Victoria back. But, most of all, I’m so glad that Ms. Gleason has been so consistently good with her novels. Right now, she is my favorite author
September 23rd, 2008 at 1:15 am
ok, i finally have it together enough to respond about the book. I loved it! except Max is a saddddd choice who doesn’t deserve Victoria and Sebastian should have won! ok but other than that. YAY YAY YAY LOL i was just so sad about the sebastian thing I didn’t know how to respond without too much ranting LOL. Well done again Colleen!
